Personal Worship
Today, we turn our attention to the restoring mission of Jesus and the extraordinary freedom he came to bring into our broken world.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, as I approach your presence today, I ask that you meet with me in power. Remind me that you are the God who frees. The wind and the seas obey your voice; set me free from the chains that imprison me today.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 146…
Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord his God,
who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
who keeps faith forever;
who executes justice for the oppressed,
who gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets the prisoners free;
the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
the Lord loves the righteous.
Psalm 146:5-8
As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
Luke 4:14-21
As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Luke 4:14-21
When Jesus stood in the synagogue and read from Isaiah, he announced that the long-awaited promises of God’s restoring kingdom were being fulfilled in him. He came to proclaim good news to the poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and freedom for the oppressed. His mission was not limited to sharing information about God; it also included bringing his kingdom’s transforming power into the lives of broken people. We sometimes reduce Jesus to someone who simply forgives our past and secures our future, forgetting that he also brings real freedom and restoration into our present lives. Although complete wholeness awaits the fullness of his kingdom, we can bring our captivity, suffering, and brokenness to him today. As his people, we are also called to join his mission by proclaiming the gospel and extending his compassion to those who are hurting.
Lord, I ask that you open my eyes to who you are and the freedom you can bring into my life.
Lord Jesus, revive our hearts with a fresh understanding of your restoring power. Bring freedom to those living in captivity, heal broken lives, and awaken our churches to participate faithfully in your mission.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer
Jesus, I surrender the broken places in my life that I have tried to manage without you. Lead me into the freedom you offer, and make me a willing instrument of your compassion and grace.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in 2 Corinthians 3…
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
2 Corinthians 3:17
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
