Personal Worship

As the arrival of Christmas draws closer we take a look this week at Rahab who finds herself in the Christmas Family Tree.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I approach your throne today I am reminded this Advent season that though I live in a world of darkness you are my helper and my deliverer and I ask that you do not delay in meeting with me.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 13:

How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I take counsel in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me
Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.
But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord,
because he has dealt bountifully with me.

      Psalm 13:1-6

As you read the passage, ask the Lord to reveal a word or phrase that stands out to you.

And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.” Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.” But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.” But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof. So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out.

      Joshua 2:1-7

As I reread the passage, I am reflecting on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Joshua has taken over the leadership of Israel and now they begin the campaign to take the land that God is giving to them. Knowing that Jericho is a well-fortified city Joshua sends spies ahead. Rahab who is a prostitute in the city makes a bold decision and defies the king of Jericho. She chooses to hide the men. We will find out why tomorrow, but again we come to a story in Scripture where we are forced to wrestle with who God chooses to use for his purposes. A prostitute in the city hiding the spies of God is a shocking narrative.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you open my eyes to what you have for me today. Show me what courage for your sake looks like.

  1. Ask God to put you in the story. What do you see? Hear? Smell? Taste? Feel?
  2. Why do I think Rahab does this?
  3. What does courage look like for the sake of God or his people in our current world and culture?

Lord, Christmas reminds me that you are the God of breakthrough. You have not forgotten your people so we ask for a move of the Holy Spirit in this dark world. Would you enter in and do only what you can do? All of the glory is yours.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, I yield in obedience to you. I look at the example of Rahab, a prostitute in Jericho, who had the courage to defy the king in order to protect your people and your purposes. Let my obedience look like that in this world. Fill me with your Spirit and let me seek after what you seek after in this world.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Mark 2:17:

And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

     Mark 2:17

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
