Personal Worship
We end the week looking at the shepherds in the Christmas story.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, as Christmas approaches, let me experience your love today. Let me experience your love that became flesh for me, a love that went as far as the curse was found for me to be redeemed, a love that, because of the joy set before you, endured the crushing weight of the cross. Reveal yourself afresh to my soul now.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 100…
For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
Psalm 100:5
As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

This Sunday we will light the Shepherds candle to remind us of their part in the Christmas story. Of all the people that could have been invited to the birth of the Savior of the world it was the lowly shepherds out in the fields. It was not the religious elites or the Roman politicians it was the shepherds. God sent a multitude of angels to men that were overlooked by society. He invited men who were not even allowed to give testimony in court to see with their very own eyes what has happened. The sign that they were to look for was a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a stone manger. It is an image of what Jesus’ life will end like. That Jesus is a baby who was born to die. That for the sake of his people his mission on this earth was one that will lead him to a cross.
Lord, I ask that you would open my eyes to the Christmas story. Give me new eyes and an open heart to what you have for me in this season.
Heavenly Father, as we enter this season of Advent, we remember the hope you brought to the world through the birth of your Son, Jesus Christ. Stir our hearts with the same anticipation that awaited his coming, and awaken in us a deeper hunger for your presence. Revive us, O Lord, that we may shine your light in the darkness. As we prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christ’s birth, renew our faith, restore our joy, and draw us closer to you. Let this season be a time of spiritual renewal, where we reflect your love to those around us. Come, Lord Jesus, and reign in our hearts anew. May the hope, peace, joy, and love of Advent transform us and lead us to walk in your ways.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer
Lord, in obedience I understand that the gospel is not for the haughty, but for the lowly. I lay down my ego and pride at your feet now. Let me embrace the Christmas story and treasure it in my heart.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Romans 8…
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
