Personal Worship

Joshua has what I assume was a shocking meeting with the commander of the army of the Lord.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I approach your throne today I am reminded this Advent season that though I live in a world of darkness you are my helper and my deliverer and I ask that you do not delay in meeting with me.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 16:

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
    in the night also my heart instructs me.
I have set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
    my flesh also dwells secure.
For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
    or let your holy one see corruption.

      Psalm16:7-10

As you read the passage, ask the Lord to reveal a word or phrase that stands out to you.

When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” And the commander of the Lord‘s army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

      Joshua 5:13-15

As I reread the passage, I am reflecting on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Joshua has his burning bush moment. The commander of the Lord’s army is the pre-incarnate Jesus and he is meeting with Joshua before they move on Jericho. Joshua falls to his feet because he knows this is the only thing they need before battle. They can have the best army in the world, but if the Lord does not go with them it means nothing. This is a beautiful picture of Joshua worshipping and trusting the Lord with what whatever happens next.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you would meet with me as you met with Joshua. I may not be facing a military battle, but I am fighting battles in this life and need you.

  1. What do I think Joshua must have been feeling?
  2. Am I trying to fight any battles in my life without the Lord’s help?
  3. Where do I need to ask the Lord to fight a battle on my behalf?
  4. In the midst of that will I fall on my face and worship him no matter the outcome?

Lord, Christmas reminds me that you are the God of breakthrough. You have not forgotten your people so we ask for a move of the Holy Spirit in this dark world. Would you enter in and do only what you can do? All of the glory is yours.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, you are so good to me. I praise you that you are the God who has not forgotten his people, but you meet with them in the midst of all of the things that they are facing. I yield in obedience to you today. I lay down everything I am facing in my life and I ask that you would fight on my behalf.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Mark 2:17:

And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

     Mark 2:17

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
