Personal Worship
We are in the same passage as yesterday, this time we are focusing on what it means to be God’s workmanship.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, would you be my Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace today? Let me experience your love through your Word and prayer today.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in 2 Corinthians 5…
For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
2 Corinthians 5:14-15
As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:1-10
As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”
Ephesians 2:1-10
After Paul finishes reminding us of who God is and who we are because of that he reminds us that the love of God doesn’t just save us from something, but it saves us for something as well. Yes, his love and his mercy save us from our sins, but he saves us to be his workmanship. We don’t earn his love by good works, but his love transforms us to do good works. How beautiful is it that Paul can write this about us? That we are God’s workmanship. All of our messes and failures are not the final word in our lives, but in Christ Jesus, we do good works. We honor God and his love by being obedient to what he has called us to do here on this earth. When we come to faith we see that obedience to God is a get to do not a have to do.
Lord, I ask that you show me the beauty of being your workmanship. That you created me in Christ Jesus for good works. That in this life I get to walk in those things.
Heavenly Father, as we enter this season of Advent, we remember the hope you brought to the world through the birth of your Son, Jesus Christ. Stir our hearts with the same anticipation that awaited his coming, and awaken in us a deeper hunger for your presence. Revive us, O Lord, that we may shine your light in the darkness. As we prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christ’s birth, renew our faith, restore our joy, and draw us closer to you. Let this season be a time of spiritual renewal, where we reflect your love to those around us. Come, Lord Jesus, and reign in our hearts anew. May the hope, peace, joy, and love of Advent transform us and lead us to walk in your ways.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. Ephesians 2:1-10
Yielding Prayer
Lord, your great love and mercy produce in me a peculiar weight of glory. That amidst all the brokenness of this earth, you call me to be the light in a dark world. You call me to practice good works, not to save myself, but to glorify you with my body. Fill me with your Spirit and let me see obedience to you as a get to do today and not a have to do.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in John 1…
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
