Personal Worship

The shepherds are invited to the greatest scene in all of history.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I approach your throne today I am reminded that you are the God who came and met your people. You left the throne of heaven and entered into humanity to save our souls. Let me experience your love and mercy today.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 19:

The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words,
    whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,
which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

      Psalm 19:1-6

As you read the passage, ask the Lord to reveal a word or phrase that stands out to you.

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

      Luke 2:8-20

As I reread the passage, I am reflecting on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Luke 2:8-20

The gospel is good news to those who are outcasts and feel like they don’t deserve good news. That is exactly who these shepherds were. We may romanticize shepherding today, because of how Jesus took on the label of Good Shepherd, but during this time there was nothing fun about it. Shepherds were the outcasts of society. They were physically isolated in the fields, but also socially as well. The Lord decides that he wants them to be the only visitors on the night that the Savior enters the world. What did they see? They saw a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a stone manger. Jesus is showing them and us exactly why he came. It is showing them how his life will end. The baby in the manger that day is a baby that was born to die to save the souls of man. That one day in the future he will be wrapped in burial cloths and laid in a stone tomb all for the sake of those who will believe that he is who he says he is. The Christmas story points us to the death and resurrection of Jesus!

Ask

Lord, give me a heart that invites those who are far off. Let me see that the good news of the gospel is not meant to be kept to myself or those who I think deserve it. It is good news for all mankind!

  1. Who are the outcasts in our society currently?
  2. What does this passage teach me about who God is?
  3. Who can I invite to the Christmas Eve service to hear the good news of the gospel?

Lord, Christmas reminds us that you are the God of breakthrough. You are the God who entered into time, space, and into our realities. I ask that you would do it again. We live in a dark world and we need the Light of the World to shine forth. I ask that you would send the Holy Spirit in a supernatural way that many would enter into your family in this season.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Yielding Prayer

Lord, create in me a heart like yours. A heart that desires those who are far off to be brought into the fold. It is astounding to me that you sent angels to proclaim this good news to the shepherds and then invited them to you. Transform my heart to look more like that!

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Isaiah 9:6:

For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

     Isaiah 9:6

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
