Personal Worship

Merry Christmas! Take some time to ponder what we celebrate today. God has broken into time and space, and into our lives to save us from our sins! The Light of the World has arrived.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, I approach your throne today confidently because you are the God who chose to meet with his people. You left heaven and came to earth to make a way for me to enter into this time with you right now. Thank you for what you have done and hear my prayers.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Isaiah 9:

The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
    on them has light shone.
You have multiplied the nation;
    you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
    as with joy at the harvest,
    as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
For the yoke of his burden,
    and the staff for his shoulder,
    the rod of his oppressor,
    you have broken as on the day of Midian.
For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult
    and every garment rolled in blood
    will be burned as fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
    there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
    to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
    from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

      Isaiah 9:2-7

As you read the passage, ask the Lord to reveal a word or phrase that stands out to you.

 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

      Luke 2:1-7

As I reread the passage, I am reflecting on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

      Luke 2:1-7

The Savior of the world entered into humanity as a child. We see even in his birth his mission in this life. As a baby wrapped tightly in swaddling cloths and laid in a stone manger, just like he will be laid after he is crucified. Jesus came to seek and to save the lost which is a group that we were a part of. Christmas is good news to a dying world that there is hope. A hope not found in the things of this world, but a hope where God himself entered into our stories to share in our sufferings. Rest in the fact that Jesus loved and wanted to be in a renewed relationship with you in a way that he took on flesh and all that comes with being human to do it.

Ask

Jesus, I ask that you let me see afresh what Christmas really means. Let me not just live through Christmas or read about it, but let me experience all you have for me in it.

  1. Where am I putting my hope in things of this world?
  2. What do I learn about God from this passage?
  3. How can I make space to ponder what the Lord has done at Christmas today?

Lord, you entered into our world once and we know that you are coming again. In the meantime, we are asking that you would send revival to a dying world. Send your Spirit to our nation in a supernatural way for a period of time that many will come to faith in you. Bring many to repentance in this season and draw them into a relationship with you.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

      Luke 2:1-7

Yielding Prayer

Lord, you are the Savior of the world. I so often acknowledge that, yet I am so often drawn to try to save myself through my own efforts or the things of this earth. Break me of that desire and let me rest in the truth that you did it all on my behalf and I can cease striving.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Luke 19:10:

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

     Luke 19:10.

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
