Personal Worship

John has a doubt at the end of his life, but Jesus responds so kindly.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, I approach your throne today confidently because you are the God who chose to meet with his people. You left heaven and came to earth to make a way for me to enter into this time with you right now. Thank you for what you have done and hear my prayers.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 9:

The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
And those who know your name put their trust in you,
for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.

      Psalm 9:9-10

As you read the passage, ask the Lord to reveal a word or phrase that stands out to you.

When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written,

“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way before you.’

Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

      Matthew 11:1-15

As I reread the passage, I am reflecting on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

John spends his whole life pointing people to Jesus and speaking truth to those in power. The latter of those things gets him arrested and thrown in jail where he will eventually be beheaded. John has a moment of doubt. He is worried as he sits in prison did he waste his life? Jesus tells John’s disciples to reassure John that he has not. Jesus doesn’t yell at his doubt or make him feel bad, he gives John and us grace in our doubts. Jesus doesn’t stop there though he says that no one born of women is greater than John. Wild statement overall, but especially for a man who on his worldly resume didn’t do too much in the eyes of the culture. He had a short-lived ministry when everyone went to Jesus. He ended up in prison and he was eventually beheaded and never saw old age. Jesus looks at him and calls him great! He had the most successfully unsuccessful life ever. John’s life is exactly what our lives are called to be. Pouring our whole life out not to be known, but for Jesus to be known. His life is beautiful.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you meet me in my doubts right now. Give me your Spirit to bring them to you the place they belong.

  1. What doubts do I need to bring to Jesus?
  2. What does it look like for me to follow in the footsteps of John?
  3. Where in my life can I make Jesus known?

Lord, you entered into our world once and we know that you are coming again. In the meantime, we are asking that you would send revival to a dying world. Send your Spirit to our nation in a supernatural way for a period of time that many will come to faith in you. Bring many to repentance in this season and draw them into a relationship with you.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written,

“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

      Matthew 11:1-15

Yielding Prayer

Lord, let my whole life be surrendered to you. I yield in obedience that this life is not about me but it is all about you. I praise you for who you are and let my life glorify you.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Luke 19:10:

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

     Luke 19:10.

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
