Will Jesus treat Zacchaeus just like everyone else does or will the heart of Jesus be different?
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, this Advent season would you give me a longing for you? Give me a longing to see you for who you are. Spare me from the distractions and busyness that hide your face from me. Allow me as I enter into your presence to be filled with your joy and peace as I seek you at this moment. Holy Spirit open my eyes to what you have for me today.
We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 92:
“How great are your works, O Lord!
Your thoughts are very deep!
The stupid man cannot know;
the fool cannot understand this:
that though the wicked sprout like grass
and all evildoers flourish,
they are doomed to destruction forever;
but you, O Lord, are on high forever.
For behold, your enemies, O Lord,
for behold, your enemies shall perish;
all evildoers shall be scattered.”
Psalm 92: 5 – 9
Today we are reflecting on the words of Jesus in Luke 19, where we read:
“And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Luke 19: 5 – 10
Jesus sees Zacchaeus, knows him, and calls him by name. In Jesus’ eyes, Zacchaeus isn’t a tax collector and a thief, but he is known personally. Feel the beauty of a Jesus who knows the lost by name. Jesus calls the sinner out of a tree and why can he do that? He knows that in just a little while he will be hanged on a tree for sinners. It’s a beautiful foreshadowing of what’s to come. What is the response of all those around them? Anger and grumbling was the response. They know Zaccheaus doesn’t deserve to host Jesus. And now Jesus has a label. He’s now the guest of sinners. Think about that. the eternal Son of God loves the lost enough that he becomes known for being with them. We see the heart change of encountering Jesus has a consequence to the life that Zacchaeus has been living. He stands, which means whatever he says next he has to accomplish. He gives it all away and gives it all back. The law stated that he only had to give 20% on top of what he stole. So if he took $1 from me all he would have to return is $1.20. Instead, he decides for every dollar he stole he would give back $4. This move bankrupted Zacchaeus. You know what though he doesn’t care. He sees and knows Jesus as being far more valuable than any dollar he could earn. Jesus sums it up for all of us. Salvation came to the house of Zacchaeus, not because of his actions, those were a response to the reordering of his heart that happened when he met Jesus. And the mission of Jesus is to seek and save the lost.
Jesus, break me of my pride, and show me where I am lost. You are worthy of it all so allow me to come to you with everything.
1) What sticks out to me about the story of Zacchaeus?
2) Where am I like Zacchaeus?
3) Has my life changed to match my heart change when I met Jesus?
Lord, I come to you lost in need of a Savior. Revive my heart and reorder what I love in this life so that you are number one. I ask that you would revive those who are lost in my family, in my workplace, in my city, and in this nation. Would you pour out your Spirit in a supernatural way in this Advent season so that your glory would draw people to yourself?
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.
Yielding Prayer
Lord, break me of the pride that tells me I have it all together. You came to seek and to save the lost. I want to be saved, so let me know that I am lost. I lay down my sin at your feet and ask you to take it and save me from it. Change my heart and let my life follow after that change.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Luke 19:10
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.“
Luke 19:10
Closing Prayer
We turn to you, Lord God, Father Almighty. And with pure hearts, we offer to you our best and truest thanks, as much as we can in our weakness.
With all of our hearts, we pray for your exceeding kindness. In your good pleasure, stoop down to hear our prayers, and drive out the enemy from our thoughts and actions.
Increase our faith, guide our understanding, give us kingdom thoughts, and lead us to your spiritual joy through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever, amen.
