Personal Worship

Happy Wednesday! Today as we continue looking at the word gifts, we find ourselves looking at the gift of leadership.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Guide us, O God, by your Word, and Holy Spirit, that in your light we may see light, in your truth find freedom, and in your will discover peace; through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 84:

Behold our shield, O God;
look on the face of your anointed!
For a day in your courts is better
    than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

       Psalm 84:9-10

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture, where we read:

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

       Mark 10:35-45

We see in the story above that James and John wanted to lead. They wanted to sit at the right and left of Jesus in seats of power. Jesus warns them of what that involves, but he also shows that Christian leadership is not the same as the world’s version of leadership. The spiritual gift of leadership is not power to be yielded, but a commitment to serve. The gift of leadership is different than the gift of administration that we previously studied. The gift of leadership is all about the what and the where, not the how. Its purpose is vision casting. The gift of leadership is the supernatural enablement to cast vision, motivate, and direct people to harmoniously accomplish the purposes of God. It is all about vision. It is about a vision that comes with a deep personal relationship with God. The Church needs to follow after the vision of God and not man, so leaders need to be deeply intuned with the direction that God wants to lead his people.

Ask

Lord, open my eyes to what you have for me. I want to have everything that you have created for me to have. Give me the desire to pursue the gifts that your Spirit has given me. Give me wisdom and discernment to identify and use what you have bestowed upon me.

1)How does the gift of leadership build up the body of Christ?
2)How can this gift be applied and used?
3)What characteristics does someone who has been given this gift have?
4)Have I been given this gift, why or why not?

Wake us up, Lord! Remind us to live aware, to redeem the time, to listen to your words, and to be willing to make a difference in the places you’ve called us to be. Thank you for your mighty power that acts on behalf of your children. Out of your kindness, please extend to us your grace and freedom. Cover us with your protection. Empower us with your strength. We ask for an awakening of your presence in our own lives and in the world around us, as never seen before. We pray for your help to be faithful to proclaim your name, and that all the enemy’s plans to silence the name of Jesus would be crushed.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer

Lord, I praise you that you have invited me into what you are doing to make this earth look more like heaven. I surrender to the life that you have called me to. I ask now that you would show if the Holy Spirit has given me the gift of leadership. If he has would you give me the grace to lead well? Fill me with your Spirit about where your Church needs to go in this moment and in the future. Give me character that far outweighs my skills and talents. Lead me so I can lead well. Lord, if this is not the gift that you have given me let me follow well. Pour out your Spirit so I can support the vision that has been cast and let me find my place where you have me.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Matthew 28:

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

         Matthew 28:18-20

Closing Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit. Fill me with love. Fill me with joy. Fill me with peace. Fill me with patience. Fill me with kindness. Fill me with goodness. Fill me with faithfulness. Fill me with gentleness. Fill me with self-control. Let me walk in your Spirit today as I leave here.
