Personal Worship

Today we will look at what the Bible calls “grieving” the Holy Spirit.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Our Father, we look to you, the one who opens rivers on the bare heights, fountains in the midst of valleys, and pools of water in the wilderness! Pour your Spirit over us afresh as we seek your face today! For we know that, with you, is abundant life. (based on Isaiah 41:18)

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the provision, faithfulness and forgiveness that God gives us in Psalm 32

Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,
    whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah
I acknowledged my sin to you,
    and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

      Psalm 32:1-5

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

       Ephesians 4:29-32

“We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

       Acts 5:32

“In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.”

       Romans 6:11-13

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Sin is the biggest thing that impairs our relationship with God. We want God to fill us and answer our prayers, but we also often want to maintain the ability to live our lives on our terms. It just doesn’t work that way. We can (and will!) still sin as Christians. But the Bible speaks of a deeper walk with God (one in which we are filled with his Holy Spirit) that we forfeit when we walk in willful disobedience (Matt. 5:8, John 14:21, 1 John 3:21-22, Psalm 66:18, Isaiah 59:2). Bottom line: being willfully disobedient takes us out of the river, robbing us of our peace and joy (sin is bondage to us! See Romans 6:16), and leaving us open to the discipline of God, as he seeks to put us back on the right path.

It has been said that “Perfect obedience would be perfect happiness, if only we had perfect confidence in the power we were obeying.” It may be that you do not trust that God’s way will bring you life. Maybe it feels like God is asking you to give up too much. Maybe there is a sin that you can’t see living without (or being able to give up). But we have spent the last 4 weeks looking at all that God offers to us! He loves us and desires an intimacy of relationship with us characterized by his presence, love and power for us and for the people all around us! Can we not trust the loving heart of that Father?

But perhaps the thought of living in daily obedience to God is overwhelming to you, or feels like a “bondage” of a different sort! I mean, let’s be honest, there is a long list of “do’s” and “don’ts” in just the one passage of scripture from Ephesians that we looked at above! So, how do we attempt this seemingly impossible task? The passage from Romans above helps us understand what this looks like.

We have talked about “yielding” to God many times in this 5-week study (in fact the “yielding” principle is embedded in our Personal Worship daily). This speaks of a daily surrender (or offering of yourself) to God, as one who is no longer under the dominion or power of sin and who is willing to submit to all that God desires in their lives. This is one of the ways we empty ourselves (see week 1) as we seek to then be filled with the Spirit. When we offer our whole hearts to God in this way, we are then trusting that he will come and empower this obedience (that we would be unable to accomplish on our own), as we seek to work it out during our day! It is a surrendered, submissive heart that he comes and fills!

But, before we go, what do we do with those things that have defeated us in the past, like an addiction, or some hurt or offense that feels impossible to let go of, chronic anger, or some other besetting sin? Well, first, we stop believing that they are too much for us! That is a lie of the enemy! With God, all things are possible! Next, we confess that sin to another believer. There is power in confessing our sins to one another. James 5:16 tells us that, in confessing to and praying for each other, we will be healed. We are only as sick as our secrets and our secret sins keep us in the darkness with them. Finally, we submit to God as outlined above and the devil has to flee. (James 4:7) Brothers and sisters, there is victory in Jesus! Let us trust that he will get us there!

Ask

Gracious Father, where am I on this path of obedience? Do I seek to live a life of holiness? Have I understood the connection between obedience and your filling? Are there sins that I allow to stay because they seem to be “no big deal?” Or maybe there is a sin in my life that seems unbeatable. Lord, forgive me for my sins! And help me to trust that, with you, I can have victory!

Lord, I want all of you that there is to have! I want that personally, I want that for Rio, and I want that for the Church here in South Florida! So, give us faith for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our day! And teach us to wait on you, to listen for your voice, to pray persistently for your Empowering Presence, and then to walk in your power. Do a great work through us for the sake of your Kingdom and your glory!

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

If you are willing, pray this prayer:
Father, as intimidating as this may be, I yield to you; offering myself fully to you, and setting out on the path to obey you completely today. Help me see where you are guiding me moment by moment, and give me strength to obey you when choices are put before me. Help me to die to fleshly and worldly desires and to experience the fullness of your Spirit as we walk through this day together! Accomplish my surrender, I pray. Amen.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Romans 8:

“…in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

       Romans 8:37

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
