Personal Worship
Today we continue looking at another purpose of why God heals back then and today.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, you are the God who hears, hear me now. You are the God who sees, see me now. You are the God who knows, know me at this moment. I enter your presence seeking a loving father, so open your arms wide and hold me close, allow me to feel the love you have for me during this time in your presence. Reveal what you have for me through your Word.
We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 127:
Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.
It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
for he gives to his beloved sleep.
Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the children of one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
Psalm 127:1-5
Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Acts 3, where we read:
Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God, and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s. And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.
“And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.’ And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came after him, also proclaimed these days. You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’ God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.”

Another purpose of God’s miraculous acts of healing is to authenticate the gospel message. We see Peter as the once lame man clung to his shoulder begin to preach. The healing was very public and so this gospel message will be also. God showed the people who he is when the man was healed. He showed that he was a God of mercy and grace. He showed that he was a God who cares about what happens on this earth. He showed the people that he is a God with supernatural power. A power that cannot be explained by science, reason, or logic. The only way to explain is exactly the way Peter chose to do it. Peter took this opportunity to preach Jesus crucified to all the people. They saw the powerful act now they hear about who it came from. God uses miracles to visibly manifest who he is on this earth and that opens up the opportunity for all who see to come to faith in a personal relationship with him.
Lord, I praise you for you are. I praise you that you care about us here on this earth. You have given us bodies and you care about our bodies. I thank you that sometimes you choose to heal. Will you show me opportunities to pray for people to be healed? Will you give me the courage to preach your gospel to those who need to hear it?

3)If I were in the crowd that day, would I have been more apt to listen and believe what Peter said if I saw and believed that he was truly healed?
4)Do I believe that God has the power to heal?
Open your gates and step down, King of Glory. Show us your glory. Show us your mercy. Show us the freedom that you have for your people. Open our eyes to who you are and what you have for us. Pour out your Spirit. Wake us from our slumber and break us of the idols that we cling to. Draw us close to your all-consuming fire and let us burn for you and you alone.
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer
Lord, you are so gracious to us here on this earth. You showed your power to your people back then and gave Peter the courage to preach the gospel in order to show your mercy to not just the lame man, but to everyone who saw. Would you come in power again? I surrender my life to you and declare that I am powerless without you. Pour out your Spirit in and through me.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Exodus 15:26:
…for I am the Lord, your healer.

Closing Prayer
Lord, let me remind myself of the truth that you have heard my prayers today. You have not rejected me in any way, shape, or form. You have not withheld your love from me, but your unfailing love engulfs me. Let me cling to those truths as I go from here. No matter what my day holds, those truths will remain. Make my day an offering to you, the God who deserves it all.
