Personal Worship
We enter into the Garden of Gethsemane with Jesus today.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, by your Spirit would you allow me to enter into Passion Week alongside you? As you walk the road that for me, open my eyes to all that you suffered. As I see your suffering would you show me how loved I am by you and that you would endure all of this for me? Seal these affections deep in my heart and transform me through them.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in John 16:
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Jesus leaving the upper room and knowing what he is about to face does what is a habit for him. He goes to meet with the Father in prayer. Gethsemane literally means oil press and the gospel of Luke tells that Jesus was under so much pressure that he was sweating blood. In that moment he knew what he needed was to be connected to the Father. And what does Jesus pray? He prays the desire of his heart. He wants the cup of wrath to pass by him. He knows what he will have to go through is horrendous. How does his prayer end though? It ends with unyielding obedience and trust. He obeys and trusts the Father’s will even if it goes against his desires at the moment. Prayer is the place where our desires and the Father’s will meet. We all have deep desires that we want to see happen. The question for us is will we take them to the Father? And in the midst of those desires will we honestly say not my will, but your will?

God, give me trust in you like Jesus has. Let me be able to come to you openly and honestly sharing my heart and my desires, but also give me a trust in you that responds in obedience no matter the answer that you give me.
Lord, of all weeks to manifest your presence through the Holy Spirit would it be this Passion Week? Pour out your Spirit on this nation. Open our eyes to a Savior who was crushed and resurrected for weary sinners. Wake those who have fallen asleep. For those stuck in guilt and shame show them that you are the Savior who was crucified in order to set them free. Pour out the same Spirit on us that raised Christ from the dead, so that you may have all the glory.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer
Lord, you have given my heart desires and I praise you that you allow me to bring them to you. I trust that you are the God who moves and when you move you move perfectly. Let my heart hold onto prayers that you have not answered, but also give me a heart that obeys you even when I don’t get what I want. Let me spend time today earnestly seeking you and what you have for me.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Isaiah 53:
Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:4-6
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
