Personal Worship

We meditate on putting on the armor of God in the midst of our spiritual battles.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, you are the God who keeps promises. You are the God who does not forget his people even when they seem to have forgotten you. Meet with me now. Remind me who you are and who I am because of what you have done. Fill me with your Spirit and meet with me now.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 103…

The Lord works righteousness
    and justice for all who are oppressed.
He made known his ways to Moses,
    his acts to the people of Israel.
The Lord is merciful and gracious,
    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always chide,
    nor will he keep his anger forever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
    nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
    so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
As a father shows compassion to his children,
    so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
For he knows our frame;
    he remembers that we are dust.

       Psalm 103:6-14

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

       Ephesians 6:10-20

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Ephesians 6:10-20

God has not left us alone to fight the battles that we face today. While he showed up for Israel in the midst of physical battles Paul makes it clear that our battles are not against flesh and blood, but the spiritual forces in this world. God has not left us alone to fight on our own. He has given us the armor of God.

Ask

Lord, you are God, and I am not. I ask that you show me the tools you have given me to fight the spiritual battle I am in.

  1. What sticks out to me about this passage?
  2. What battle in my life seems to be against flesh and blood but is really against the spiritual forces?
  3. Where are the schemes of the devil after me?
  4. How can I practically put on the armor of God in my life today?

Lord, I repent of my self-reliance today. In a world that teaches me that I need to do all things through my own strength, remind me that you strengthen me in all things. You are the God who has sent me a helper in the Holy Spirit, and let me not forget that today. Fill me with power by the promise of your Holy Spirit.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Yielding Prayer

Lord, thank you for the way you equip your people. Forgive me for fighting the wrong battles and trying to do it in my own power. Equip me with the armor of God today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Psalm 16…

You make known to me the path of life;
    in your presence there is fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

      Psalm 16:11

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
