Today we will see that there is a spiritual battle taking place in this world and not everyone is happy that God is a God of deliverance.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, as I approach your throne today let me feel the gravity of both your holiness and your mercy. That you are the King of Kings, yet as your child, you invite me into your throne room. I ask that you would meet me and care for me during this time
We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 32:1-2:
Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
Psalm 32:1-2
Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Acts 16:19-24, where we read:
But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers. And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city. They advocate customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice.” The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. Having received this order, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
Acts 16:19-24
When the power of God touches the economic structure of the powers at be, then the opposition is bound to come. These “owners” were to put it lightly upset at what Paul has done. Their hope was in this woman remaining possessed and making them money by telling fortunes. They did not care about this woman. All they cared about was the profit that she made them. Their god was money and they would do whatever it takes to worship at the feet of money even at the cost of this poor woman. So they were brought to the magistrates where beaten and thrown in prison. This all seems to have escalated rather quickly. We have to remember the spiritual battle that is being fought here. We saw that satan was trying to trick the people of the town by having this demon-possessed woman speak the truth about Paul. When God smashed that plan by delivering this woman then Satan had to escalate. When deception doesn’t work Satan’s toolbox gets a lot smaller and he instantly turns to persecution. If he cannot deceive the people of God from turning from the gospel then maybe he can beat it out of them. We do not want to overestimate Satan’s power, but we also cannot live like he doesn’t exist. Satan’s job is to steal, kill, and destroy and we need the power of God to deliver us from his attacks.
Lord, I praise you that you are all-powerful. There is none like you and none can compare to you. Open my eyes to the spiritual war that is being waged right in front of me.
1)Where is Satan trying to deceive me right now?
2)What does religious persecution look like in modern America?
3)Have I ever been persecuted for my faith?
4)Where do I need the Holy Spirit to reveal, encourage, or deliver me spiritually?
Lord, I want to see revival in this world, in my country, in my city, and in my home. Begin that revival with me. Wake me in the places I have fallen asleep. Clear out the cobwebs of my soul. Break me of the mute idols that I cling to. Set me ablaze and let that fire spread for your glory and your glory alone.
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.
Yielding Prayer
Jesus, I ask for your protection as I seek to be obedient to you. In a culture that is increasingly at odds with your Word and your truth would you give me the confidence to proclaim your Word boldly? Bind the enemy, keep me safe from all of his devices, and allow your power to go out into this world through my life.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Psalm 32:7:
ou are a hiding place for me;
you preserve me from trouble;
you surround me with shouts of deliverance.
Psalm 32:7
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
