Personal Worship
Samson torches a field today.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, as I approach you today, I remind myself of who you are. You are the God who created all things and desire all of the glory. You are a God who is perfectly holy and set apart, and yet you choose to reside with your children. So I ask and expect that you will do that now during this time in your Word and prayer.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 16…
I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Psalm 16:8
As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
After some days, at the time of wheat harvest, Samson went to visit his wife with a young goat. And he said, “I will go in to my wife in the chamber.” But her father would not allow him to go in. 2 And her father said, “I really thought that you utterly hated her, so I gave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister more beautiful than she? Please take her instead.” 3 And Samson said to them, “This time I shall be innocent in regard to the Philistines, when I do them harm.” 4 So Samson went and caught 300 foxes and took torches. And he turned them tail to tail and put a torch between each pair of tails. 5 And when he had set fire to the torches, he let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines and set fire to the stacked grain and the standing grain, as well as the olive orchards. 6 Then the Philistines said, “Who has done this?” And they said, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife and given her to his companion.” And the Philistines came up and burned her and her father with fire. 7 And Samson said to them, “If this is what you do, I swear I will be avenged on you, and after that I will quit.” 8 And he struck them hip and thigh with a great blow, and he went down and stayed in the cleft of the rock of Etam.

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Samson’s anger begins with personal offense but quickly becomes destructive. What begins hidden in the heart soon becomes visible in life. Private compromise often starts when I permit hurt to remain unsurrendered before God. What I justify inwardly can eventually shape outward choices that wound others and dishonor the Lord.
Lord, I ask that you search my heart and show me the hurts I am holding on to.
Revive us, Lord! By the power of your Holy Spirit, convict us and lead us back to repentance. Bring us back to our first love in you.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer
Lord, I yield my hidden reactions to you. Teach me to surrender hurt before it becomes sin. Form in me a heart that responds in obedience rather than reaction, and keep my private thoughts aligned with your Spirit.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Romans 12…
Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
