We come to one of the most famous and beautiful verses in all of Galatians!
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, as I enter into your presence remind me of what you say in Zephaniah 3:17. You are the God who is in my midst. You are the God who is mighty to save. You rejoice over me with gladness. You quiet my restless heart with your love. Through every aspect of my life, you are singing over me. Bury these truths deep down in my soul as I enter into my time with you.
We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 16:
You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 16:11
Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Galatians 2:20-21, where we read:
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.
Galatians 2:20-21
On that fateful Friday thousands of years ago, four things were nailed to that cross. The first and most obvious was Jesus Christ himself. The second is the sign that read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” The third thing nailed to the cross was the debt of sin of all who would come to faith in Jesus Christ. The fourth may be the most shocking. If you are a follower of Christ you were nailed to the cross too. William Perkins, a Puritan in the late 16th century, put it like this, “We are in mind and meditation to consider Christ crucified: and first, we are to believe that he was crucified for us. This being done, we must go yet further, and as it were spread ourselves on the cross of Christ believing and withall beholding ourselves crucified with him.” The Scriptures make it clear, but how can this be?
This truth that we have been crucified with Christ rests on the doctrine of union with Christ. We encounter union with Christ everywhere in the Scriptures. Over and over we see that the Christian is in Christ, that the Christian is united to Christ. When we put our faith in Jesus Christ, then we are in Christ. Our union with Christ becomes a spiritual reality. Martin Luther describes it like this, “By faith, you are so cemented to Christ that He and you are as one person, which cannot be separated but remains attached to Him forever.” It is such a wild doctrine because it states that once we are united to Christ by faith, then everything Christ has ever done becomes something that we have done. Because Jesus lived a perfect life and died a painful death it is like we have done that. Because Jesus was buried in a tomb and raised again it is like we have been buried in a tomb and raised again. The only way to get what Christ has to offer to us is to be united to him by faith.
This doctrine is so beautiful, but such a mystery. One of the obstacles to this is our language about grace, righteousness, and other theological words sounds like they are objects that we receive after Jesus hands them to us. Grace is like a ball when we come to faith in Jesus, Jesus then takes that ball and hands it to us and we hold it. That may be how our language describes it, but we only receive grace by being united to Jesus. Grace is not an external object, but grace is a person. The person of Jesus that we enter into a united relationship with through faith alone. Let it sink in that Jesus the eternal Son of God not only died for you, but he desires to be united with you for the rest of eternity. Let that settle all the fears and worries. Let that lead you to joy and freedom today.
Jesus, show me what it looks like to be united to you. Let me rest in the fact today that you are the God.
No questions today. All the questions I could come up with made me feel like I need to work harder at crucifying myself so I could earn Jesus’ love and mercy and that’s the opposite direction of where we want to go.
So take some time today and just remind yourself that you are justified by faith alone in Jesus alone. You are objectively declared righteous purely because you believe in what Jesus did on your behalf. You don’t have to earn it. You don’t have to keep striving. You are united to Christ for eternity and he is never going to let you go. Praise him for that. Confess where you doubt or where you are trying to earn it. Take some time and just rest in it.
You are the God who moves. I ask that you would do exactly what you have done in every century throughout history. Move in your people. Awake the sleepers. Save the lost. Meet this world in a supernatural way that brings you all the glory. We are crying out for a broken and messy world that needs your love so desperately.
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.
Yielding Prayer
Lord, it amazes me that you have done it all for me. You died so that I can have life. Remind me today of these simple yet profound truths that I am justified by faith alone and because of that, I am united to you. Let me live today like I am united to the Savior who loves me and died for me.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Ephesians 2:8-9:
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
