Personal Worship

God arrives on the scene and responds in kind to the building of the Tower of Babel.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

*Ephesians 3:14-19

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 84…

For a day in your courts is better
    than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
the Lord bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
    from those who walk uprightly.
 O Lord of hosts,
blessed is the one who trusts in you!

      Psalm 84:10-12

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

       Genesis 11:5-9

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

God comes down (and gives us some trinitarian language in the process just as an aside) and sees what the people are in the process of doing. His response to confuse their language and disperse them seems harsh. It’s not though it’s gracious. The people are in the midst of sin by trying to be god for themselves. God has two options let the people continue down a path that leads them away from the True God or remove them and give them a chance to return. It is the kindness of God that leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4). Oftentimes that kindness may not look like kindness at the moment, but God does things for his people that are for our good and his glory even when our perspective at the moment seems otherwise.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you show me your kindness that leads to repentance today. Speak to me now.

  1. Why do I think God dispersed the people from Babel?
  2. Where has God’s kindness in the past led me to repentance? Did it seem like kindness at the moment?
  3. Where is God using this story as kindness to draw me into repentance today?

Lord, awaken my soul. Fill me with your fire again. Let me see me for who I am, but let me see you for who you are. You are the God of resurrection, please resurrect the dead inside of me. Let me walk in the Spirit today.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, teach my heart to trust that all your ways are good and you can be trusted in all circumstances. Teach me and give me the eyes of faith that have the ability to look beyond what my earthly eyes can see. You are a God of kindness so let me trust and obey you today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Ephesians 3…

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

       Ephesians 3:20-21

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
