Personal Worship

We continue in our “One Thing” series, seeking out what is most important in this life.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, I am restless till I rest in you. Pour out your Spirit on me. Speak to me through your Word.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 143…

Hear my prayer, O Lord;
give ear to my pleas for mercy!
In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness!
Enter not into judgment with your servant,
for no one living is righteous before you.

       Psalm 143:1-2

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

       Acts 9:1-9

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

       Acts 9:1-9

The Apostle Paul, who is Saul here, has an incredible story. While he was still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, the risen Jesus met him. Amid his very great evil, the Lord transforms him. Firstly, what a powerful testimony of the mercy and power of God. Of all the people that God could have chosen, he chose Saul. Secondly, this passage is a gift that reminds us of what Jesus thinks about his people. Jesus is in heaven at the right hand of the Father in his glorified physical body, and yet he likens Saul’s persecution of his people to his own. That is how much Jesus cares for us.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you let me experience your mercy and power just like Saul did that day.

  1. What sticks out to me about this passage?
  2. Where has Jesus shown me great mercy?
  3. Where has Jesus transformed my life?
  4. Where do I need to remind myself of what Jesus thinks about me?
  5. What is the Lord inviting me into today?

Lord, let my sighs give way to songs about your faithfulness. Let my pain reveal your glory as my only true rest. Let my losses show me that all I truly have is you. I am satisfied in you. Revive us, oh Lord. Make your barren land fruitful again.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

       Acts 9:1-9

Yielding Prayer

Lord, you are the God who saves the lost. We live in a broken and sinful generation, and I am tempted to forget about your great power to save. Remind me today that no one is too far for your mercy to capture them. In obedience, I preach your Word to all who need to hear it.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Philippians 1…

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

       Philippians 1:6

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
