Personal Worship

Today, we meet Jesus in the wilderness and learn that God’s Word is stronger than any hunger, weakness, or temptation.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, with so much uncertainty in this life, let me hold fast to your Word. I cling to the promise of Isaiah 55:11 that your Word never returns empty and always fulfills what it sets out to do. Meet with me at this time by the power of your Holy Spirit.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 119 …

Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.

       Psalm 119:105

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

       Matthew 4:1-4

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Jesus enters the wilderness hungry, weak, and alone, yet he does not fight temptation with willpower alone. He answers the enemy with the Word of God. When Satan tempts him to turn stones into bread, Jesus refuses to use his power apart from the Father’s will. His answer teaches us that life is not sustained by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Our deepest need is not merely relief, comfort, or control. Our deepest need is to trust what God has spoken. In seasons of pressure, temptation, or weakness, Jesus shows us that the Word of God is not just information to know but bread for our souls.

Ask

Lord, by the power of your Holy Spirit, I ask that you give me an unshakable love for your Word. Let it be the foundation for my whole life.

  1. Where am I tempted to seek immediate relief instead of trusting God’s Word?
  2. What hunger, weakness, or pressure is exposing what I truly depend on?
  3. How am I learning to receive God’s Word as daily bread for my soul?
  4. Where do I need to answer temptation with what God has already spoken?

Lord, revive my heart with a deeper hunger for your Word. Awaken me to trust what you have spoken more than what I feel, crave, or fear. Let your Word become living bread to me again.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

       Matthew 4:1-4

Yielding Prayer

Father, I yield my hunger, weakness, and desire for control to you. Teach me to live not by bread alone, but by every word that comes from your mouth. When temptation comes, help me stand with Jesus and obey what you have spoken.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Isaiah 55…

 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

      Isaiah 55:11

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
