Personal Worship

Paul continues his argument by switching from how they began in faith to the question of how they will end in faith.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, in your presence, is where I find life. As I enter into your presence would you show me who you are and let me experience all that you have for me? Fill me with your Spirit in this time and renew my spirit.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 68:

Sing to God, sing praises to his name;
    lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts;
his name is the Lord;
    exult before him!
Father of the fatherless and protector of widows
    is God in his holy habitation.
God settles the solitary in a home;
    he leads out the prisoners to prosperity,
    but the rebellious dwell in a parched land.

      Psalm 68:4-6

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Galatians 3:3-5, where we read:

O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

      Galatians 3:1-9

Today, Paul moves on from their initiation into faith and hits them with a rapid series of questions that all find their answer in hearing the true gospel with faith. He begins with a question on completion. If they know that they were converted by faith alone what happens after that? Are they now trying to perfect themselves in the flesh on their own? The answer seems obvious, but it is so easy in this life after coming to faith to then try to do it on our own. Yes, Jesus’ blood is the entrance into the family, but now I have to work to stay in it. We take the burden that Jesus released us from and willingly put it back on ourselves. In our day-to-day lives, we forget the power of the Holy Spirit and we seek to do it all on our own power. And it doesn’t lead to transformation, but it leads us to exhaustion. The same Spirit that brought us to faith will transform us in power. That is what our hope and trust are in, not ourselves! Paul then reminds them of the persecution that they went through when they came to faith. If they turn from the true gospel then all that they suffered is in vain. Our suffering in this life is not worthless, but it is producing in us a peculiar weight of glory. It is in the suffering of Jesus on the cross that we are able to live in the sufferings of this life and not lose hope. Paul ends with an argument stemming from the miracles that they have seen. Jesus provided them with the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit, something that the law could never provide.

Paul is reminding them that all of this comes back to the single issue that the true gospel is not received by working according to the law it is received by hearing and believing with faith.

Ask

Lord, show me where my tendency is to go back to trying to earn all that you have for me after already receiving it all in faith.

        1)Where am I trying to perfect myself in my own power and not trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit?
        2)Where does it feel like I am currently suffering in vain? How can I remind myself today that in my suffering I am united to you in yours?
        3)Where can I pray for the Holy Spirit to move miraculously in my life or in those around me?

Lord, revive my heart today. If revival is to come let it begin in my own heart and soul. Fill me with your Spirit so that I can burn for you like a lamp that sits on a hill. Let me experience the steadfast love that you have for me and let that transform my heart to love you more and more minute by minute.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer

Lord, break me of my desire to do it on my own. Remind me today that your sacrifice is not just my entrance into the family of God, but it is what sustains me throughout this life. Take the burden of me trying to perform for your love today. Release me from the chains of self-perfection and allow me to rest in your work on my behalf today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Philippians 1:6:

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

      Philippians 1:6

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
