Personal Worship

Jesus turns from murder to adultery and from anger to lust.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I approach you I remind myself that you are the God who is in my midst. You are the God who is mighty to save. You are the God who rejoices over me with gladness, you quiet me with your love, and you exult over me with loud singing. Speak to me now.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 84:10:

For a day in your courts is better
    than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

      Psalm 84:10

Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Matthew 5:27-30, where we read:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

       Matthew 5:27-30

Jesus follows the same formula he did with murder when he speaks of adultery. They have heard that you shall not commit adultery. Jesus is not content with merely a formal adherence to that commandment. But again he takes it a step further when he says that if you have looked at a woman lustfully you have already committed adultery in your heart. Jesus is speaking of a deep-seated lust that consumes and devours. When the imagination attacks and mentally contemplates and commits adultery. This is a piercing command, not just because of who we are as humans, but because of the world we live in. In a world where sex sells, advertisements seek to cause us to lust. In the world of streaming where ratings and regulations no longer apply sexual content is at the forefront. It is in our world where Jesus comes to us and says to not just stay away from adultery, but from lust as well. Jesus seems to get really serious when he says to cut out your eye or cut off your hand if you need to. Some historically have taken this literally like Origen in the early 3rd century. So does Jesus really want us to cut off parts of our body if we fall into lust? No, he does not! Jesus knows even if we are eyeless and handless, our heart is the issue. Jesus is telling us through this passage that we need to deal drastically with our sins. We must not pamper it, flirt with it, enjoy it, or feed it. We are to hate it, crush it, and dig it out of our hearts. Allowing sin to grow is not beneficial in our lives. Jesus is not stripping us of good things, but he is protecting us from the evil and corrosive nature of lust.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you show me where lust has taken hold of my heart. Open my eyes to the purity that you have called me to.

1)Why do I think Jesus takes lust so seriously?
2)Are there any sins in my life that I have become comfortable with?
3)Where is the Holy Spirit convicting me and where do I need to confess those things to God?

Lord, we ask that you would pour out your Spirit on our lands. Will you meet with your people again? Revive us with the power of your Spirit. Transform us and let us see your glory.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer

One thing I of the Lord desire—
For all my way has darksome been—
Be it by earthquake, wind, or fire,
Lord, make me clean. Lord, make me clean!

       – Walter Chalmers Smith (1824-1908)

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in James 1:17:

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

       James 1:17

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
