Personal Worship

We turn to the New Testament and see a man wealthy like Abraham, but with a faith that is lacking.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, I bow before you, yearning for Your guidance and comfort. Your love and mercy have been my strength, and I am grateful. Please open my heart to your will and fill me with your Spirit. Lead me in your truth, and help me to trust in your plan. Surround me with your peace and draw me closer to you.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Revelation 5…

Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: ‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!’

      Revelation 5:13

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” But he said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” And Peter said, “See, we have left our homes and followed you.” And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.”

       Luke 18:18-30

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Both Abraham and this rich young ruler have wealth and power. Abraham and this man are much different thought. Each are seeking out an Everlasting God and eternal life, but doing it much differently. Abraham’s faith is counted as righteousness and we never see him defend himself by his actions. On the other hand this young man wants Jesus to know how pious he is. Jesus knows the one thing that grips his heart and it is his wealth. Abraham is generous in his giving and this man is trapped by white-knuckle syndrome over all of his things and that’s why he walks away sad.

Ask

Lord, give me eyes to see what you have for me today. Use your Spirit and speak to me now.

  1. What differentiates Abraham and the rich young ruler?
  2. Why do I think Jesus responds this way?
  3. Why are material goods tempting to our human hearts?
  4. Where do I need to repent and confess to God?

Heavenly Father, I seek your revival in my life. Restore my soul and renew my mind. Pour out your Spirit upon me and awaken a deeper love for you. Help me to turn away from distractions and focus on your purpose for my life. Let your grace renew my heart and inspire me to walk in your truth with unwavering faith.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, break me and make me yours. Let me see your beauty. Let me see that you are the Everlasting God. You are all my heart longs for. Forgive me for all the ways I try to replace you and fail because of it. Satisfy my soul with your presence today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Jeremiah 29…

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

       Jeremiah 29:11

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
