Personal Worship

We come to some of the most well-known passages in James this week as we seek to understand faith and works.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Father, as I come to you now, quiet my heart and open my mind. Help me to hear your voice through your Word and speak with you in prayer honestly and humbly. Fill me with your Spirit so I may understand, obey, and draw closer to you. I come not in my strength, but through the grace of Jesus. Meet me here, Lord.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 121…

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

       Psalm 121:1-2

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

      James 2:14-17

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

James challenges us to consider the authenticity of our faith. It’s not enough to say we believe in Jesus—our faith must be visible in how we live, especially in how we respond to the needs of others. When we see someone suffering and only offer kind words without practical help, we reveal a gap between our profession and our practice. True faith is alive and active, moving us toward compassion, generosity, and obedience. Faith that doesn’t show itself in action is, as James says, dead.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you let me understand how my work on this earth corresponds to my faith in you.

  1. When was the last time my faith moved me to take action for someone in need?
  2. Are there people around me whose needs I’ve ignored or responded to only with words?
  3. How do I tend to separate belief and action in my daily life?
  4. What would it look like for my faith to become more alive through love and service?

Lord God, we come to you with humble hearts, asking for revival—begin in us. Stir what has grown cold, awaken what has fallen asleep. Renew our love for you, our hunger for your Word, and our passion to live for your glory. Cleanse us of pride, apathy, and sin. Fill us with your Spirit, that our lives may shine with compassion, truth, and holiness. Revive your church, Lord, and let it begin with me.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

      James 2:14-17

Yielding Prayer

Lord, You have shown me what real love looks like—a love that gives, serves, and acts. Forgive me for the times I’ve said I believe in you but have done nothing to show it. Open my eyes to the needs around me, and give me a heart that responds with compassion and courage. Let my faith not be empty words but a living testimony of Your grace. Teach me to love in truth and deed, that others may see Your goodness through my actions. Strengthen me to walk in obedience today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Proverbs 3…

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.

       Proverbs 3:5-6

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
