Personal Worship
Abraham spends a long time acquiring the place of Sarah’s burial.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, as I approach you today remind me that my only comfort in life and death is that I wholly belong to you. You are God and I am not. Fill me with your Spirit and speak to me today.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Romans 8…
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Now Ephron was sitting among the Hittites, and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the Hittites, of all who went in at the gate of his city, “No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. In the sight of the sons of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead.” Then Abraham bowed down before the people of the land. And he said to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, “But if you will, hear me: I give the price of the field. Accept it from me, that I may bury my dead there.” Ephron answered Abraham, “My lord, listen to me: a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver, what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.” Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver that he had named in the hearing of the Hittites, four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weights current among the merchants.
So the field of Ephron in Machpelah, which was to the east of Mamre, the field with the cave that was in it and all the trees that were in the field, throughout its whole area, was made over to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the Hittites, before all who went in at the gate of his city. After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah east of Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. The field and the cave that is in it were made over to Abraham as property for a burying place by the Hittites.

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Why does Abraham go through so much effort to bury Sarah at this specific place instead of just picking any land that is unoccupied? It would have been much easier if Abraham had chosen somewhere else, but Abraham was determined to bury Sarah in the cave of Machpelah overlooking a field of trees at Mamre. Why? This location was special because it is where God came to Abraham and promised him that Sarah would give birth to a son within one year. It was the place where Sarah laughed at God’s promise. This was a final act of love toward Sarah. It is not just the past that Abraham is looking at, but the future. Abraham believed that one day a Messiah would overthrow death and bring resurrection life. Maybe Abraham wanted Sarah’s first waking view to be the location where God vowed to bring new life to Sarah’s barren womb. It is a beautiful act of faith that Abraham believes God is a God of resurrection.
Lord, give me a hope and a faith like Abraham had that one day you are going to raise all those who have died and believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior. Let me cling to that hope.
Lord, We come before you with hearts longing for renewal and revival. Pour out your Spirit upon us, ignite our faith, and rekindle our passion for your Word. Cleanse us from complacency and draw us closer to you. May your love and grace transform our lives, and may we be vessels of your light in a world in need. Restore our hope, strengthen our faith, and renew our commitment to your will.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen for how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer
Lord, give me a resurrection faith. Remind me that you are the God who takes dead things and brings them back to life. I lay down the things in my life that are “dead” and I ask that you breathe life into them today. Let me walk in obedience to what you have for me today.

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in John 11…
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
