Personal Worship
We continue in the Book of James today as we look at our own hearts.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Heavenly Father, I come to you now with a quiet heart, seeking your presence. Thank you for the gift of this new day and for the privilege to sit with your Word. Open my eyes to see truth, open my ears to hear your voice, and open my heart to receive what you desire to teach me. Cleanse me from distractions, forgive me where I’ve wandered, and draw me near by your Spirit. May this time with you shape my thoughts, renew my heart, and deepen my love for you.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 100…
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!
Know that the Lord, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!
For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
James 4:1-3
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

James diagnoses the cause of quarrels and fights as selfish desires that battle within us. When we want something and don’t get it, we resort to anger, manipulation, and even violence in our thoughts or actions. James then challenges us to examine our prayer lives: do we ask at all? And when we do ask, is it with wrong motives? This passage calls us to honest self-examination. It’s not just about external behavior, but internal craving—longings that, if not submitted to God, distort our relationships and even our prayers. James invites us to realign our desires with God’s will, not to indulge our pleasures but to seek what truly gives life.
Lord, show me my heart. Let my heart desire you above all else.
Lord God, my heart has too often been drawn to the things of this world—its approval, its pleasures, its pride. Forgive me for loving what you call me to leave behind. Revive me, O God. Set my heart on fire for what is eternal. Make me holy, set apart, and fully yours. Teach me to resist the pull of the world and to walk in the power of your Spirit. Let my life reflect the beauty of Christ, so that I may live for your glory, not my own.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer
Lord God, I come before you with an honest heart. I confess that so often my desires are misaligned with yours. I strive, I crave, I fight—even in small ways—because I want things my way. I see now that my prayers have sometimes been selfish, more about satisfying myself than seeking your will. Forgive me, Lord, for the ways I have let my own wants lead me into conflict with others and distance from you. I yield my heart to you today. Teach me to desire what you desire. Shape my motives, purify my longings, and align my prayers with your heart. Help me to seek peace, not control; to seek you, not just your gifts. I surrender the battles within me and ask for your grace to walk in humility, trust, and obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in 2 Corinthians 12…
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
2 Corinthians 12:9
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
