Personal Worship
Today we follow Jesus into Gethsemane, where we learn to surrender our will to the Father in prayer.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Lord, by the power of your Word, all things were created that were created. I ask now that by the power of your Word you would create life in me. Where there is sin, bring conviction. Where there is repentance, bring forgiveness. Let me see you and love you more deeply.
I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 40…
I delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart.”
Psalm 40:8
As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Jesus enters deep sorrow and agonizing prayer. He does not pretend the cup is easy, yet he yields completely to the Father’s will. We see that surrender is not weakness; surrender is trust. While the disciples sleep, Jesus remains faithful. Because he obeyed in the garden, we can bring our own fears, griefs, and desires before the Father and say, “Your will be done.”
Lord, teach me to surrender as you did. Give me a prayer life that meets with my Father in the midst of it.
Father, revive us in the place of prayer. Wake us from spiritual sleep and teach us to surrender with trust, courage, and love.
As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer
Lord Jesus, we yield our will to your will. We surrender our plans, preferences, fears, and timing to the Father, trusting that his way is holy and good.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Hebrews 4…
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
