With time being of the essence to save Jairus’ dying daughter Jesus takes a moment with a woman just as desperate as Jairus, but equally as different.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Jesus, I come into your presence as one who is weary and heavy-burdened and I am looking for rest. The yoke of this world is too heavy for me to carry. Teach me and show me your humble and gentle heart at this time. Let me find the rest that my soul is looking for. Give me your yoke that is easy and your burden that is light.
*Adapted from Matthew 11:28-30
We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 103:
15 As for man, his days are like grass;
he flourishes like a flower of the field;
16 for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
and its place knows it no more.
17 But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children’s children,
18 to those who keep his covenant
and remember to do his commandments.
19 The Lord has established his throne in the heavens,
and his kingdom rules over all.
Psalm 103:15-19
Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Luke 8:42b-44, where we read:
42b As Jesus went, the people pressed around him. 43 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. 44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.
Luke 8:42b-44
Jesus immediately sets out to go to Jairus’ house. On the way though a dramatic miracle takes place. We are introduced to a desperate woman just like Jairus. Desperate to meet Jesus. She is very different than Jairus though in all human ways. While Jairus was at the top of the social spectrum she was not on it all. This is due to the chronic illness that she was suffering from. An illness that was a discharge of blood for more than a decade. One that she tried all options to solve medically, but one that was not resolved. What we have to understand is that she was not just suffering physically, but this hemorrhage had ruined her whole life. According to the law of Moses, a woman with a discharge of blood was considered ceremonially unclean. She was not allowed to enter the temple or participate in public worship. No amount of ceremonial cleaning would do. She was not even allowed to touch other people, because if she did they too would become defiled. People suffering from chronic illness often suffer from isolation. Their physical limitations cut them off from social interaction. Imagine the depth of this woman’s pain. She was alienated. She was an outcast. She would have had to pull away from all human contact. For the last twelve years not having any contact with her family. For the last twelve years, this woman never received so much as a hug that I am sure she desperately desired and needed. But she believed that Jesus could be the answer. Even if she could just touch the hem of her garment.
We all find ourselves desperate for a cure in some way. Whether that cure is physical or spiritual. There is suffering in all of our lives due to the fallen nature of this world and we are powerless to stop ourselves. It could be a besetting sin, a broken relationship, an incurable disease, a chronic illness, the list could go on and on. All of those things leave us discouraged, defeated, and isolated at times. When all hope seems lost for us we need to remember our God who loves us and cares for us and is far more powerful than we could ever hope for or imagine.
Lord, I ask that you meet with me in this place now. Whether they are at the surface of my mind or not meet with me in my sufferings. Fill me with your power and hope.
Lord, we join with the psalmists as we pray for revival (Psalm 85:4-9):
4 Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
and put away your indignation toward us!
5 Will you be angry with us forever?
Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
6 Will you not revive us again,
that your people may rejoice in you?
7 Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
and grant us your salvation.
8 Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints;
but let them not turn back to folly.
9 Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him,
that glory may dwell in our land.
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.
Yielding Prayer
Lord, I am desperate to experience you. There are so many sufferings that are a part of my world. Sufferings that no matter how hard I try or work for I just cannot rid myself of them. Lord, give me supernatural obedience at this moment to trust you with them. Let me trust you with what seems hopeless and dead in my life today. You are the God who all things were created for and to and let me feel your presence and your power now. Revive my heart to pray and ask for the things I stopped asking for long ago because they seem impossible. Fill me with hope and trust again.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Romans 8:11:
The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.
Romans 8:11
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
