Personal Worship
Today we will face the inevitability of failure in every life and explore what God says to do about it.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Father, we thank you that we have been given the bread of life in you, and that our spiritual hunger has been forever satisfied! As we humble ourselves before you these three weeks and sacrifice something that is important to us in favor of receiving more of you, we offer you our response of love and wait for your blessing here at your feet. For we know it is only you who can satisfy our souls. (Based on John 6:35 and Jeremiah 31:25)
We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 73:
Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
you hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will receive me to glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:23-26
Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Psalm 37, where we read:
“The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand.”
Psalm 37:23-24
Simply put, failure is a part of life for all of us here on planet earth! And yet, even though we know this (and experience it regularly), we’re somehow still surprised when it happens! In today’s social media age, where only “success” is portrayed, we need to remember (and to teach our children) to expect failure! And we also need to know what God says to do with our failures (and to keep in mind that he often brings great good out of them).
Failure is defined as a lack of success in doing something. It’s coming short of a performance standard that we have set for ourselves or that others have set for us. It may be something that is our fault, (like failing an exam because we didn’t study enough), or someone else may be to blame (like when a business fails because someone embezzled money from its accounts). And sometimes we can have a sense of failure when we have not actually failed (like losing a job in a re-organization). So, with these definitions in mind, what does the Bible teach us about failure and disappointment?
Well, a lot. Failure and disappointment are on just about every page of the Bible. From Adam and Eve in the first book of the Bible, to the failures of the individual churches in Revelation (the last book of the Bible), it is full of family failures, friendship failures, leadership failures, health failures, spiritual failures etc. The Bible paints a very real picture of the various troubles we will encounter in this life and makes it very clear that we should expect to fail from time to time!
Over the next few days, we will look at a few lessons the Bible teaches regarding failure, but our scripture passage for today reminds us that God is not surprised when we “fall” (or fail). If our hearts are surrendered to him, we will be led by him step by step, through his word, our thoughts, affections, plans, and even through our failures; often without our being consciously aware of it. He will keep us from being ruined by our “falls” (or failures) into sin or trouble and will use it for our good and his glory. Nothing is wasted in God’s economy! He never leaves us or forsakes us! And he does not let us flounder in our failures; but tenderly, by his grace and Holy Spirit, holds our hand in and through it!
In this season of PrayFirst, we ask the Lord to help us personally and corporately:
Personal:
Ask the Lord to reveal your heart towards your failures. Consider whether you have expected them in your life, and trusted him to walk with you through them, for your good and his glory. Have you let them define you or discourage you? Have you been mad at him for them or blamed him in any way? Ask him to help you reframe failure in your head and heart and trust that he is leading you to a greater place of victory through them! Commit them to him and orient yourself to begin to look for the good that he purposes to bring through them.
Corporate:
Pray for BCS today (and for the other schools across Broward County). Pray that our children will learn how to fail well. That they will be able to process their failures and be drawn closer to the Father because of them. Pray that the Lord will shield their hearts from the negative effects of social media and technology and the unreal expectations of a failure-free life that they create.
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.
“The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand.”
Psalm 37:23-24
Yielding Prayer
Lord, I love the picture of intimacy this verse portrays. You are a close, caring God, in constant touch (literally) with your people. Help me to walk through my days with a heightened sense of your presence and direction. Let me know the warmth and strength of your hand. Make me to delight more and more in you and your ways!
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Romans 8:
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
