Personal Worship

We enter into our final week in the Book of James!

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord God, as I come to this time of quiet, I draw near to you with expectation and need. Speak to me through your Word, soften my heart, and open my eyes to see you more clearly. Remove every distraction and help me to listen. I welcome your presence, trust in your goodness, and surrender this time to you. Teach me, shape me, and draw me deeper into your truth and love. Amen.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 34…

I will praise the Lord at all times.
I will constantly speak his praises.
I will boast only in the Lord;
let all who are helpless take heart.
Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness;
let us exalt his name together.

       Psalm 34:1-3

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

      James 4:13-17

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

James gives us the sobering reminder of how easily we assume control over our future. We often make plans as if life is predictable and entirely in our hands, forgetting that we are not guaranteed tomorrow. James challenges us to live with a deep awareness of God’s sovereignty, to say, “If the Lord wills,” and mean it. This isn’t just a phrase—it’s a posture of humility. To acknowledge God’s will is to live with dependence, surrender, and trust, recognizing that every moment is a gift. Sin, James reminds us, isn’t just doing what’s wrong—it’s also knowing the good we ought to do and failing to act. This passage invites us to slow down, seek God’s guidance, and live in daily obedience.James diagnoses the cause of quarrels and fights as selfish desires that battle within us. When we want something and don’t get it, we resort to anger, manipulation, and even violence in our thoughts or actions. James then challenges us to examine our prayer lives: do we ask at all? And when we do ask, is it with wrong motives? This passage calls us to honest self-examination. It’s not just about external behavior, but internal craving—longings that, if not submitted to God, distort our relationships and even our prayers. James invites us to realign our desires with God’s will, not to indulge our pleasures but to seek what truly gives life.

Ask

Lord, I ask that you give me the freedom to remember that you are the one in control. Remind me of the brevity of this life today and bring me back to reliance on you.

  1. In what areas of your life have you been making plans without seeking God’s will?
  2. How does recognizing the brevity of life change the way you live today?
  3. What does it practically look like for you to say, “If the Lord wills” in your daily decisions?
  4. Is there any good you know you’ve been avoiding or postponing? What step of obedience can you take today?

Lord God, I come to you weary and in need of your renewing fire. Stir my heart again with holy passion. Awaken what has grown dull. Breathe new life into my soul and restore to me the joy of your salvation. Break any hardness in me and draw me back to first love. Fill me with your Spirit, cleanse me with your mercy, and make me burn bright for you again. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

      James 4:13-17

Yielding Prayer

Lord, I confess how easily I take control, make plans, and chase goals without first asking what you desire. Forgive my pride and presumption. I acknowledge that my life is a mist—a breath—and only you know what tomorrow holds. Teach me to walk humbly with you, to seek your will in all things, and to hold my plans loosely in your hands. Help me not to delay in doing the good you’ve placed before me. I surrender my calendar, my ambitions, and my desires to you. Let your will be my way. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in James 1…

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

      James 1:17

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
