Personal Worship

James gives us a short lesson on what it looks like to wait on the Lord.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord God, as I come to this time of quiet, I draw near to you with expectation and need. Speak to me through your Word, soften my heart, and open my eyes to see you more clearly. Remove every distraction and help me to listen. I welcome your presence, trust in your goodness, and surrender this time to you. Teach me, shape me, and draw me deeper into your truth and love. Amen.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 34…

Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!
Fear the Lord, you his godly people,
for those who fear him will have all they need.
Even strong young lions sometimes go hungry,
but those who trust in the Lord will lack no good thing.

       Psalm 34:8-10

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

      James 5:7-11

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

James 5:7–11 calls me to a kind of strength that isn’t loud or instant—it’s the quiet strength of patience. Like a farmer waiting for rain, I’m reminded that spiritual growth takes time, and that God is working even in the waiting. When suffering stretches on, it’s easy to grumble or give up, but James points me to the prophets and to Job as examples of faith-filled endurance. Their stories prove that God is full of compassion and mercy. This passage gently teaches me that perseverance isn’t just about getting through trials, but about learning to trust God’s timing and character more deeply in the process.

Ask

Lord, fill me with patience in the waiting. I ask that you teach me to live this life in such a way that shows people that you are returning.

  1. In what area of my life is God asking me to be patient right now?
  2. How do I typically respond to delays, disappointments, or long seasons of waiting?
  3. Am I quick to grumble or complain when things don’t go as I hope?
  4. What can I learn from the example of Job or the prophets to help me endure with hope?

Lord God, I come to you weary and in need of your renewing fire. Stir my heart again with holy passion. Awaken what has grown dull. Breathe new life into my soul and restore to me the joy of your salvation. Break any hardness in me and draw me back to first love. Fill me with your Spirit, cleanse me with your mercy, and make me burn bright for you again. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Lord, I confess that waiting is hard for me. I want answers now, solutions now, relief now—but you call me to patience and to trust that you are at work even when I don’t see it. So I surrender my timeline to you. Help me to stand firm, like the prophets who trusted you through trials, and like Job who held on even when he didn’t understand. Teach me to wait with faith, to speak with kindness instead of complaint, and to rest in your compassion and mercy. I yield my heart to you again today. Amen.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in James 1…

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

      James 1:17

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
