Personal Worship

Let our yes be yes and our no be no!

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord God, as I come to this time of quiet, I draw near to you with expectation and need. Speak to me through your Word, soften my heart, and open my eyes to see you more clearly. Remove every distraction and help me to listen. I welcome your presence, trust in your goodness, and surrender this time to you. Teach me, shape me, and draw me deeper into your truth and love. Amen.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 33…

Let the godly sing for joy to the Lord;
    it is fitting for the pure to praise him.
Praise the Lord with melodies on the lyre;
    make music for him on the ten-stringed harp.
 Sing a new song of praise to him;
    play skillfully on the harp, and sing with joy.
For the word of the Lord holds true,
    and we can trust everything he does.
 He loves whatever is just and good;
    the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.

       Psalm 33:1-5

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

      James 5:12

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

      James 5:12

James 5:12 calls us back to simple, truthful speech. In a world where words are often exaggerated, manipulated, or used carelessly, James reminds us that integrity matters. Our “yes” should mean yes, and our “no” should mean no. God is not impressed with dramatic vows or spiritual-sounding promises—he desires honesty that flows from a sincere heart. This verse challenges us to examine not just what we say, but how and why we say it. It’s a call to live with such consistency and truthfulness that we don’t need to convince anyone with oaths or swearing. Our lives and our words should align, reflecting the character of Christ.

Ask

Lord, make me someone of integrity that can be trusted when it comes to my speech.

  1. Do my words consistently reflect truth and integrity?
  2. Have I ever used exaggerated language or spiritual talk to appear more convincing or trustworthy?
  3. What would it look like for my “yes” to truly mean yes and my “no” to mean no?
  4. Is there anyone I need to go back to and speak truthfully or clearly to?

Lord God, I come to you weary and in need of your renewing fire. Stir my heart again with holy passion. Awaken what has grown dull. Breathe new life into my soul and restore to me the joy of your salvation. Break any hardness in me and draw me back to first love. Fill me with your Spirit, cleanse me with your mercy, and make me burn bright for you again. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

      James 5:12

Yielding Prayer

Lord, I confess that my words haven’t always been simple or honest. Sometimes I speak too quickly, too carelessly, or try to sound more spiritual than I really am. Forgive me for the ways I’ve twisted truth or spoken without integrity. I want my words to reflect a heart that is anchored in you. Teach me to speak simply, truthfully, and lovingly, so that my “yes” and “no” bring you honor. Help me live a life where my words and actions match. I yield my tongue to you, Lord—may it always point to you. Amen.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in James 1…

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

      James 1:17

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
