Grow Spiritually

As we wrap up the study of our third core value: Grow, we will look at the peace that comes from fully trusting God with our lives.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

I position my soul to wait for you, Lord! You are my help and my shield. My heart is glad in you, because I trust in your holy name. (Psalm 33: 20-21) I take my eyes off myself right now and focus on your greatness and love, as I wait.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in God’s creative power in Revelation 4…

Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.
       Revelation 4:11

This week, as we explored our 3rd core value: Grow, we first reflected on Jesus’ promise of ever-increasing freedom for those who continue to abide in his word! Then we saw how sanctification is a work of God in and through us. And, in the 3 days after that, we looked at how, in order for God to do his sanctifying work in us, we have to cooperate with him by: believing what he tells us, committing to pursue obedience wholeheartedly, and by choosing his will over our own. Today, we reflect on what it means to be clay in the potter’s hand:

But now, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.
       Isaiah 64:8

Our amazing God is the creator and sustainer of the universe and all that is in it (see the Rejoice passage above)! And we, the people he has called to himself, are his beloved children! This verse speaks of how he is molding and shaping us. He is transforming us from ordinary clay into beautiful vessels fit for his use and glory.

And he does this through discipline and training, inward exercises, and outward divine care and direction. He makes everything in our lives and circumstances subservient to the one great purpose of causing us to grow in grace, and of conforming us, day by day, hour by hour, to the image of Jesus. Sometimes he uses joyful things! Other times, things that are painful, confusing, or disappointing. But nothing in our lives is outside of God’s control and everything is constantly and continuously being used by him to lovingly call us to himself and teach us to rest in his hand. (Psalm 139:16) He made us and he understands each of us perfectly! He knows how to manage us to achieve his ends.

Can you trust him with all that you are? Can you surrender yourself, your business, your children, your health, reputation, ministry and wealth for him to hold? He holds it all anyway! It’s just a matter of you taking them off your shoulders and laying them at Jesus’ feet.

Think about how happy you are to crawl into your cozy bed at night to go to sleep. You are perfectly content knowing that the bed will hold you and you can relax every muscle in your body. But what if the bed was unstable? What if you crawled in, unsure if it would hold you. You would move about slowly and cautiously, tensed up for whatever might happen, sleeping restlessly, always fearful that it was about to cave in beneath you. God wants you to trust him so much that you can walk in assurance and rest, for the God of the universe lovingly and perfectly holds you, his child.

Ask

My Father, why is it more difficult to trust you with some things and not others? What is it that I withhold from you? Do I not believe that you are holding me? Or maybe I have looked at some of the circumstances in my life and resented you for giving them to me?

It seems like, as human beings, our goal is to avoid pain and difficulty; but I know (at least intellectually) you use these things to make me more and more like you. Lord, help me to become a person who walks through my day in absolute certainty that you have me and who learns to trust you with (and praise you for) even the hard things you give.

Lord in heaven, I pray now for the state of our world and for our country, as it grows darker and more divided. But we know, Lord, that you hold it all and that you can change anything and everything in a moment. So we ask you, Father, for revival in our world and in our country. Raise up an army of Christians who will fight the battle against the darkness with prayer and self-sacrifice! Come, Lord Jesus, and pour out your Spirit as we seek you with our whole heart!

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word…

But now, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.
       Isaiah 64:8

Yielding Prayer

Lord Jesus, as I focus on my circumstances, I sometimes lose sight of the fact that you are the one bringing them and using them to do a beautiful work in me. I admit this is a hard truth at times. Help me open my hands to you now. I place my life, my burdens, all I am at your feet. Let me know your loving-kindness to me today as I choose to trust you!

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me says to me in Proverbs 18…

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
      Proverbs 18:10

Closing Prayer

Father, help me to live this day to the full, being true to you in every way. Jesus, help me to give myself away to others, being kind to everyone I meet. Spirit, help me to love the lost, proclaiming Christ in all I do and say. Amen1
