Serve Generously

This week, we begin a study of our fourth and final core value: Serve.  Today, we will see that God has given us the great privilege to participate with him in the redemption of the world around us!

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

My Jesus, I position my soul to wait for you! As we focus this week on “Service,” I ask that you make me to know your ways, and teach me your paths. Lord, lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. (Psalm 25:4-5)

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in Jesus’ amazing promise to us in John 14…

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
       John 14:12

Today, we reflect on the fact that we were created for service!

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
       Ephesians 2:10

One of the things we’ve seen over the last 3 weeks, is that we are to pattern our lives after the life of Jesus. Among other things, this means that we are to serve as he served. On the night of the last supper, for example, Jesus performed the duties of the lowliest servant in his culture by washing his disciples’ feet. Then he told them (and us), “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.” John 13:14-15

However, this is easier said than done and can actually lead to bondage and frustration as we fret over all of the “unwashed feet” (all of the needs) around us, trying to keep up and wondering whose feet to wash and when and how. But we find freedom and help in our passage for today in Ephesians 2! For in it, we learn that:

  1. We are not called to do every available work; only the ones he has specifically designed and created us to do! The obvious question then being: which works are those? That is why our Prayer of Approach for this week has us waiting on the Lord with a heart open to his ways and leading. And tomorrow’s reflection will offer more insight and instruction on this as well.

  2. Every day we should be listening for and watching for how we can make an impact for Jesus. This might be just teaching one of God’s truths to your children, or offering a word of encouragement or hope to someone who is struggling. In these ways (and many others), we are Jesus’ hands and feet to a hurting and dying world!

Ask

My Jesus, what has my attitude been towards service? Have I viewed it as a burden; something I’m just supposed to do? And have I looked at myself as a failure because I simply don’t do enough of it? Lord, as I walk through this week, give me eyes to see the things you have designed and created me to do! And give me the faith and humility to do them! Thank you for allowing me to partner with you in your redemptive plans and purposes!

Lord in heaven, we pray for Drew Chery, our Missions Director here at Rio, and the multiple opportunities that come to us through her. Give her your mind and Spirit as she seeks to lead us to become effective servants in our community. Speak to us about the part you would have each one of us to play as these opportunities are presented! Lord, may we shine brightly for your glory as we seek to be your hands and feet here!

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word…

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
       Ephesians 2:10

Yielding Prayer

Father, what great value is found in knowing that I am your “workmanship,” your “masterpiece.” Help me to know my value as you have defined it, and not to believe the lies the enemy would speak into my ears of inadequacy and unworthiness. I trust that, as I step out to look for where you want me to get to work, that you will be faithful to meet me there!

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me says to me in John 12…

If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
      John 12:26

Closing Prayer

Dear Lord, as we rise to meet each new day, please let us be filled with your Spirit. Wherever we go, let us spread love, joy, peace, goodness, and faithfulness. Let us desire to become more like you and to worship you in all we do. Help us desire these things so much more than the sin that entices us. Thank you for always going before us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.1
