Serve Generously
As we continue today with our fourth core value: Serve, we see that the key to effective service is to stay connected to Jesus.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
My Jesus, I position my soul to wait for you! As we focus this week on “Service,” I ask that you make me to know your ways, and teach me your paths. Lord, lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. (Psalm 25:4-5)
We choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the care and provision of our God…
O Ephraim, what have I to do with idols? It is I who answer and look after you. I am like an evergreen cypress; from me comes your fruit.
Hosea 14:8
Today we reflect on our position as the branches connected to Jesus, the vine:
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:5
From this verse, we see again our dependence on Jesus for all that we are and all that we would accomplish for him! If the life (Spirit) of the heavenly vine is flowing in us, then we will bear “much fruit.” If not, we won’t. Therefore, when it comes to service, our one concern is to abide in him.
We have spent the past 3 weeks understanding the core values of Rio and how those strengthen us in our relationship with Jesus. When we Gather for worship on Sundays, Connect in relationship with our brothers and sisters throughout the week, and Grow in our understanding of his heart and mind through prayer and the study of his word in Personal Worship and Learning Groups, our connection with him grows stronger and stronger. Through that connection, he opens our eyes and ears to the needs of the people around us, as well as larger crises in our community and/or world that he gives us a unique burden for. And through his connection with us (our daily abiding in him), he organically leads and empowers us to meet those needs. As we see God bringing forth that “fruit,” our faith is strengthened and our own joy overflows!
My Jesus, how is my connection with you? What would you have me do to strengthen it? I ask you to open my eyes and ears to your direction for me today. Help me to accept interruptions and distractions as divine appointments, and pay attention to your promptings in my heart!
Lord in heaven, I pray that you make your people at Rio and across Broward County, a people who abound in good works and bear much fruit as we abide in you! Bring revival, I pray, as we align our hearts with yours and lovingly seek to give you to others! May you receive all the glory and honor and praise!
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word…
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing
John 15:5
Yielding Prayer
Father, you plainly state that, apart from you, I can do nothing for your Kingdom. Yet, there are times when, apart from you, I try to do lots of things. Help me to focus on simply abiding in you, and then trusting you for the fruit. Amen.
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me and provides all things says to me in Luke 11…
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!
Luke 11:13
Closing Prayer
Dear Lord, as we rise to meet each new day, please let us be filled with your Spirit. Wherever we go, let us spread love, joy, peace, goodness, and faithfulness. Let us desire to become more like you and to worship you in all we do. Help us desire these things so much more than the sin that entices us. Thank you for always going before us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.1
