As we continue in our fourth core value: Serve, we focus today on how God is the one who is responsible for bringing forth fruit from our lives. And how this should free us from worry!
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
My Jesus, I position my soul to wait for you! As we focus this week on “Service,” I ask that you make me to know your ways, and teach me your paths. Lord, lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. (Psalm 25:4-5)
We choose to rejoice today, with all his people, in the keeping power of our God…
The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand.
Psalm 37:23-24
Today we reflect on the proper disposition of our heart, as we step out to follow God, in service:
…do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus
Philippians 4:6-7
On Tuesday, we reflected on how our responsibility in this life of service is to abide in Christ, as a branch abides in a vine, and to watch for his will and leading. Yesterday, we talked about finding the strength for our service by offering God our weakness in return for his power. We saw that it’s his strength we want and that our strength is only a hindrance. Today we see that, as we step out in his power and strength, at his bidding, we must also trust him for the results. He is the only one who can bring forth lasting fruit!
As we learned in our Grow week, sanctification is the responsibility of God in us. That is no different for the people we minister to around us. God must take our efforts, as we offer them to him, and do what he wills in the hearts and lives of the people we serve or seek to lead to him. Just as he has a plan to grow us through his management of our lives, he has a plan for them as well. This is good news! The salvation of the world does not rest on our shoulders! We need to take this burden – the fruit or lack thereof that comes from our work – and leave it at the feet of Jesus.
We must commit our work to the Lord each day in prayer, abiding in him and asking him to guide us moment by moment. And we must trust him implicitly for each moment’s needed supply of wisdom and strength, leaving the results up to him! But then, we can’t get off our knees and take it all back, worrying about it and seeking to arrange it all in our power. Trust and worry cannot go together. As we take up his yoke (with him), we will see that it is indeed light, and when we put our complete trust in him, we will find rest for our souls!
Father God, have I fretted over the results of my efforts for your kingdom in the past? Have I stopped trying because it didn’t seem like I was bearing any fruit? Have I lived with the anxiety of my performance, as if I could control it all? God, help me to learn how to serve you from a place of surrender and trust!
Lord in heaven, I pray for our people at Rio, that it would be our joy and delight to serve you, no matter what comes of our efforts! Make our hearts truly content to be doorkeepers in the house of our God (Psalm 84:10), if that is where you want us! We trust you to use us for your kingdom purposes!
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word…
…do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus
Philippians 4:6-7
Yielding Prayer
Father, help me see the burdens I carry and to recognize how they bind me. I turn them all over into your very capable care. Help me to recognize if and when I pick them back up again. Let me walk in the confidence of your love and grace for me!
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me says to me in Philippians 2…
For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
Philippians 2:13
Closing Prayer
Dear Lord, as we rise to meet each new day, please let us be filled with your Spirit. Wherever we go, let us spread love, joy, peace, goodness, and faithfulness. Let us desire to become more like you and to worship you in all we do. Help us desire these things so much more than the sin that entices us. Thank you for always going before us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.1
