Personal Worship

As we look toward the future, we remember that lasting spiritual fruit can only come as we remain deeply connected to Jesus.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, as I come to you today I am reminded of who you are. You are the God who is faithful to his people. Not just for decades, but for thousands of years and will be faithful through eternity. I praise you and I ask for all that you have for me today by the power of the Holy Spirit through your Word.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 1…

Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree
    planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.

       Psalm 1:1-3

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

       John 15:1-11

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

       John 15:1-11

Jesus does not tell his disciples simply to work harder or accomplish more. He tells them to abide in him. A branch cannot produce fruit by its own effort because its life comes from the vine. In the same way, everything meaningful God accomplishes through us flows from our relationship with Jesus. Eighty-five years of ministry ultimately represents countless people who have remained connected to Christ and allowed his life to flow through them. Our calling today is the same. If we abide in Jesus, love one another, obey his commands, and depend upon him, he promises to produce fruit that lasts.

Ask

Lord, I desire for your joy to be full in me. I ask that you teach me how to abide.

  1. Am I truly abiding in Jesus, or am I trying to live the Christian life in my own strength?
  2. What currently helps me remain closely connected to Christ?
  3. Is there anything distracting me from deeper fellowship with Jesus?
  4. What kind of lasting fruit do I want God to produce through my life?

Jesus, draw us closer to you. Remove anything that keeps us from abiding in you, and produce in our church the kind of spiritual fruit that can only come through your life working within us.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

Yielding Prayer

Jesus, I surrender my plans, my strength, and my desire to control the results. Teach me to remain in you and allow my life to bear whatever fruit you desire.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Philippians 1…

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

      Philippians 1:6

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus
