Grow Spiritually
This week, we begin a study of our third core value: Grow. Today, we will see that, as we continue to abide in God’s word, we grow in ever-increasing freedom!
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
I position my soul to wait for you, Lord! You are my help and my shield. My heart is glad in you, because I trust in your holy name. (Psalm 33: 20-21) I take my eyes off myself right now and focus on your greatness and love, as I wait.
We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s word, with all his people in Psalm 19…
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
Psalm 19:7-11
Today we are reflecting on the words of Jesus in John 8, where we read:
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’
John 8:31-32
In this chapter, Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees and the Jewish people in the Temple courts regarding his identity. He’s challenged by the Pharisees, who refuse to believe in him, so his offers of grace then turn to warnings of judgment. But all is not lost (or so it seems)! For, as we see here, some in Jesus’ audience did “believe.” It was to those who “believed,” but who didn’t yet understand what they were signing up for, that he issued the above statement.
It appears from this passage and the surrounding verses that there are different forms of acceptance of Jesus in the heart of an individual. There is an acceptance which on the surface seems real, but proves to be otherwise by quickly withering and dying. (Cf. also Matthew 13 and the Parable of the Sower) That seems to be the case with these people that Jesus is talking to here, since, by the end of this chapter, they take up stones with which to stone Jesus! On the other hand, there is a belief which is far deeper and more vital; one that leads us to follow Jesus as our Lord and to grow and flourish, instead of withering and dying. This is a faith that abides in his word! For, Jesus tells all who would believe in him and truly be his disciples, that we will abide (continually) in his word, that the truth will be known to us as we abide in it and obey it, and that his truth will set us free!
Because of Christ’s death and resurrection, when we believe in him as our Savior, we are justified before God and freed from the guilt of our sin. But as we continue, with his help, to align ourselves with his word, trusting that he has broken the power of sin in our lives, we are progressively freed from the sin that entangles our hearts and minds and steals our joy and our peace. This ever-increasing freedom is the promise of our Lord to those who abide in his word!
Lord, how committed am I to your word? In what ways do I pursue it, keep it in front of me, seek to abide in, to obey it? I would want the freedom you offer to be ever increasing in me!
Is there something in me right now that I know does not align with your word? Are there parts of it that I consciously avoid? Give me the strength to trust that your way is better! Help me to believe that you will give me the power to align myself to your word as I surrender to you.
I pray for our church right now, gracious God. Make us a people that stand on, trust in and follow every precept you have given us! Create in us a desire to seek your word more than gold, even much fine gold, knowing it is sweeter than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. We thank you again for all the blessings you give through it, and we know that in keeping it, there is great reward!
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word…
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’
John 8:31-32
Yielding Prayer
Father God, I say “Yes, Lord” to your command to abide in your word. Show me how to proceed from here. Help me to find ways to make your word a priority in my life, maybe even with my sisters and brothers at Rio. Make my heart ever ready to obey. Thank you for your promise of freedom!
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who has loved me and has given me grace says to me in John 1…
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14
Closing Prayer
Father, help me to live this day to the full, being true to you in every way. Jesus, help me to give myself away to others, being kind to everyone I meet. Spirit, help me to love the lost, proclaiming Christ in all I do and say. Amen1
