Grow Spiritually

As we continue today in our third core value: Grow, we will look at what it means to be sanctified.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

I position my soul to wait for you, Lord! You are my help and my shield. My heart is glad in you, because I trust in your holy name. (Psalm 33: 20-21) I take my eyes off myself right now and focus on your greatness and love, as I wait.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s word, with all his people in Matthew 11…

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
       Matthew 11:28-30

Today we are reflecting on a portion of Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer in John 17, where, with us in mind, he prays that God will:

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
       John 17:17-19

The word, “sanctify” means to free from sin, to purify, or to set apart as holy. What Jesus is asking the Father to do here for us, is to make us increasingly more holy! The Westminster Shorter Catechism (question 35) defines “sanctification” as the work of God’s free grace, whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God, and are enabled more and more to die unto sin, and live unto righteousness.

As we look at both this verse and this definition, we find that the work of sanctification in us is really God’s work! And other scriptures agree. Philippians 1:6, for example, says, “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Hebrews 12:1-2 says:  “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” There are many other passages that we could cite here as well. This is good news! But it’s a very common thing for Christians to think that, once they are saved, it’s now their job to grow themselves in holiness, which just leads to despair! This is not something we can do in our own strength and must depend on God to work it in us. However, in order to grow, we must cooperate with him in this process. This week we will be looking at the ways we cooperate with him in this process of sanctification; but today, we will simply rejoice in the fact that our God will unfailingly carry it on to completion!!

Ask

My Jesus, what were you thinking as you prepared to go to the cross? It seems like your thoughts were set on your people; your “bride” whom you would purchase and then sanctify by your blood and Spirit. I thank you, Lord! Help me to trust that the work you began on the cross, you will one day complete in my life; presenting even me (on that Day) to yourself as a companion made “fit” for the Son of God himself. Let me walk in that reality today, thus bringing you glory!

Father God, continue your great work of sanctification in us at Rio, that we might look more and more like Jesus! Strengthen us for the mission you equipped us to accomplish. Teach us to confidently trust you in your work!

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word…

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
       John 17:17-19

Yielding Prayer

Lord, perhaps I’ve given up on my quest for holiness, or faithful obedience; for I’ve tried in my own strength and failed. And yet you offer me a different strength; a supernatural power; A partner in the process who is infinitely more capable than me! Help me now to surrender to your work in me and to believe that, by your power, I can be made different! Let me take up the fight against sin in my life (together with you) and see victory, as I learn to die more and more unto sin and live more and more unto righteousness, through the power of your Spirit at work in me.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me says to me in Philippians 1…

Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
      Philippians 1:6

Closing Prayer

Father, help me to live this day to the full, being true to you in every way. Jesus, help me to give myself away to others, being kind to everyone I meet. Spirit, help me to love the lost, proclaiming Christ in all I do and say. Amen1
