Personal Worship
Today we will look at what the Bible says is the problem with humanity.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
Our Father, as we humbly approach the throne, we know, as Jesus taught us, that we shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from your mouth. Speak Lord as we bow our heads and listen. Instill in us the absolute certainty that a word from you is life, and help us submit to the authority of that word today.
(based on Matthew 4:4)
We choose to rejoice in the power of God’s Word, with all his people in Psalm 145:
“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
The Lord is faithful in all his words
and kind in all his works.
The Lord upholds all who are falling
and raises up all who are bowed down.
The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food in due season.
You open your hand;
you satisfy the desire of every living thing.
The Lord is righteous in all his ways
and kind in all his works.
The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
he also hears their cry and saves them.
The Lord preserves all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.
My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.
Psalm 145:13-21
Today we are reflecting on the words of Scripture in Romans 1, where we read:
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.”
Romans 1:18-32
This is the plight of all mankind apart from Jesus. In this passage, we understand the problem and the resulting descent into sin that occurs because of it. It tells us that all of us have perceived “(God’s) invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature” in the things that have been made, leaving us without excuse. In other words, we cannot credibly claim that there is no God, for we know there is and we even understand a good deal about his nature! Yet, even though we (humankind) knew God, we chose not to honor or thank him. Instead, like Eve with the fruit, we chose to go our own way.
From here you see the progression: “they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” “Claiming to be wise, they became fools,” and chose to worship the things of the earth (which, for us, are things like money, possessions, sexual expression or “freedom,” success, etc). “Therefore, God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves.” Some forms of sexual sin are then identified here, but every form of sexual sin (including heterosexual sin) is meant to be understood. From here, Paul identifies a long list of sins (vs 29-31) that flow out of a heart given over to our passions and selfish desires. The last thought in this passage speaks to our desire to seek blessing for the sin from others, since we will not get it from God.
The fact that this passage feels harsh and antiquated to us today should remind us of just how far away we have moved from the holiness of God. It is meant to drive us to the feet of Jesus! We are reminded here that sexual sin is not the only sin (or the unforgivable sin), but just one sin amongst a long list of sins that each stem from the original sin of Adam and Eve: the sin of wanting to become like God and choosing our own way. That is a sin that each of us deals with and that sin (together with all of the sinful ways it manifests itself in our lives – see Paul’s non-exhaustive list) separates us from God. But Jesus came to save us! In his death and resurrection, he has broken the power of sin and death for us. He offers us salvation, if we will repent of our sin (of our desire to be god for ourselves and to go our own way), surrender to his authority, and make him the Lord of our life. He is inviting us to choose life!
Yet, even after we trust in Jesus and find forgiveness and true life and freedom in him, we will still sin and struggle with self in this world in which we are constantly bombarded by a different ethic than his. A Christian life is a life of continual repentance. Not unto guilt, but unto joy! A life that is constantly submitting to God and agreeing with his word for our lives. It is in this surrendered walk (not in perfection) that we find the fullness and joy that God offers us as his children! It is in this place that he works in us the power to overcome!
In this season of PrayFirst, we ask the Lord to help us personally and corporately:
Personal:
Ask the Lord to show you if there is anything in this list of sins that he wants to talk to you about. Maybe you have judged certain sins more harshly than others, or looked at some things in our culture today as not being sinful (even though God says they are). Maybe there are some things on this list that you recognize are in your life today. Allow him to have his way in you in this prayer time.
Corporate:
Pray again today for all the unsaved in your world to come to know Jesus. Pray that, as you live a life that is surrendered to the Father, they would see in you what they’re looking for.
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word.

Yielding Prayer
If you are not saved, would you surrender to Jesus now? You could pray this simple prayer:
Jesus, I confess that I have sinned against you. Forgive me for my sin and all the ways I have not lived according to your standard. I turn from that sin right now. I believe that you came to this earth, lived the perfect life and died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sins. I receive You as the Lord and Savior of my life. I give my life to You. Reign supreme in me. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
If you prayed this, please let us know so we can rejoice with you!
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Ephesians 2:
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”
Ephesians 2:8
Closing Prayer
Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
