Grow Spiritually

As we continue today in our third core value: Grow, we will look at the importance of faith in the process of our sanctification.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

I position my soul to wait for you, Lord! You are my help and my shield. My heart is glad in you, because I trust in your holy name. (Psalm 33: 20-21) I take my eyes off myself right now and focus on your greatness and love, as I wait.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice with all God’s people that Jesus has put sin to death in us, as Peter says, in 1 Peter 2…

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
       1 Peter 2:24

Today we are reflecting on the essential element of faith in the life of a believer. The Writer to the Hebrews says this in Hebrews 11:

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
       Hebrews 11:6

Yesterday we saw that sanctification is the fruit of God’s work in us. However, God will not do that work in us, if we do not cooperate with him in it. Probably the most essential element in this cooperation is to believe what he tells us. The bible defines faith as “The assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1) Similarly, the Oxford Languages Dictionary says that faith is: “complete trust or confidence in someone or something”, and a “strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.”

As we’ve seen over the past couple weeks, God has made us to be united with him, to know in our hearts the truth of all of his words, to believe in the fulfillment of his purchase of us in the death and resurrection of his son, and to be confident in his present-day power to change our lives. Failure to believe results in a divided mind and heart, which makes us unstable and unable to grow as our mind waffles. (James 1:6-8)

As we believe the promise given to us in the Rejoice passage above (that Jesus bore our sins in his body on the tree, breaking the power of sin in our lives), we can walk forward trusting that we are no longer slaves to the things that have bound us in the past. We are a people made new! We can believe that as we say “no” to the things that God has asked us to give up, he will give us the power to put those things to death.

Ask

My Jesus, you have done so much for me! You have proven your love in so many ways, and yet, I know there are things you have told me that I still struggle to believe. Show me, Lord, the unbelief in me that causes me to waffle and not walk in victory! Help me to believe that all your promises are yes and amen in Christ Jesus. (2 Corinthians 1:20)

Lord in heaven, I pray for someone I know who is caught in addiction or is struggling to believe in your promises for them. Show me how to encourage them to trust in you.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word…

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
       Hebrews 11:6

Yielding Prayer

Father God, I want to draw near to you! I believe that you exist and that your heart is to pour out blessings upon me; more than I could ever ask or imagine (Eph. 3:20).  Grow me in this faith and forgive my unbelief!

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me says to me in Romans 8…

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
      Romans 8:37

Closing Prayer

Father, help me to live this day to the full, being true to you in every way. Jesus, help me to give myself away to others, being kind to everyone I meet. Spirit, help me to love the lost, proclaiming Christ in all I do and say. Amen1
