Grow Spiritually

As we continue today in our third core value: Grow, we look at Jesus’ call to obey.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

I position my soul to wait for you, Lord! You are my help and my shield. My heart is glad in you, because I trust in your holy name. (Psalm 33: 20-21) I take my eyes off myself right now and focus on your greatness and love, as I wait.

Rejoice and Reflect

We choose to rejoice with all God’s people that Jesus has given us the free gift of righteousness, as Paul says in Romans 5…

For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.
       Romans 5:17-18

Today we are reflecting on the command of Jesus to obey:

‘If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.’
       John 14:15-17

The fruit of salvation is obedience to God. Christ, the obedient one, saves us and gives us his righteousness, not just to rescue us from the eternal effects of our sin, but to empower us to display our reciprocating love for him through our obedience to God. He, upon our salvation, begins to restore what was lost in the fall. In this verse, we see how obedience opens the door to all that God has to give of his Holy Spirit. This filling of the Spirit, in turn, gives us a supernatural desire and power to live more and more to righteousness! We saw an example of that in the first century church last week.

Immediately when we read these commands of obedience, which are everywhere in God’s word, many obstacles come to our mind; the greatest, perhaps, being that it seems impossible. We tend to equate obedience with absolute perfection. We add up all of the things we are supposed to do and all of the fruit we are supposed to bear and think that this is what God requires of us, and then give up before we start.

In actuality, what God wants is our heart. It is the heart that says “yes” to his commands! It is the heart that decides wholeheartedly (pun intended), to the best of our ability, to daily follow him in obedience. In this way, we cooperate with God in our sanctification process. We agree with him on what is right and good and on what is not. God’s commands are always given to protect us and to bring us abundant life and freedom (see day 1 of this week). Then, as we step out in faith and love for our Father, to do what he calls us to, he provides the grace and strength for us to obey (see day 2 and 3 of this week). What the law demands of us, grace promises and performs for us. We will not do this perfectly! But, if at the end of the day, you confess those sins (as we do nightly in Personal Worship) and ask forgiveness, and begin again the next day, committed to obey, you are living an obedient life, and will continue to grow in holiness and in the power of the Spirit!

Ask

My Jesus, have I gotten bogged down in my failures from the past? Have I not believed that a life of obedience was possible? Is there something I know that I should be doing that I am choosing not to do right now? Ignite a new passion in my heart to pursue obedience that I might grow in holiness and experience the life of freedom that you have promised!

Lord, I pray for your Church both here and around the world. Give us a hunger and thirst for righteousness! Help us to shine brightly with the light of your glory as we seek to lead holy lives day to day.

Yield

As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word…

‘If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.’
       John 14:15-17

Yielding Prayer

Father God, I yield to this command. I am aware that there are things in my heart that I don’t want to relinquish and things you have asked of me that I don’t want to do. I pray that you make me willing, Lord. I will say “yes” right now, trusting that you will work out in me your great and perfect purposes.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me and promises to help me tells me this in 1 Corinthians 10…

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
      1 Corinthians 10:13

Closing Prayer

Father, help me to live this day to the full, being true to you in every way. Jesus, help me to give myself away to others, being kind to everyone I meet. Spirit, help me to love the lost, proclaiming Christ in all I do and say. Amen1
