Grow Spiritually
As we continue today in our third core value: Grow, we will look at the importance of seeking God’s will above our own.
Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.
As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.
Prayer of Approach
I position my soul to wait for you, Lord! You are my help and my shield. My heart is glad in you, because I trust in your holy name. (Psalm 33: 20-21) I take my eyes off myself right now and focus on your greatness and love, as I wait.
We choose to rejoice with David and all God’s people in the majesty of our great God, in 1 Chronicles 29…
Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.
1 Chronicles 29:11
Today we are reflecting on Paul’s call to the church in Rome to offer ourselves to God, that we might know his will for us:
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:1-2
Jesus, in the Lord’s prayer, teaches us to pray, “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” He was our example of what it means to live in light of God’s kingdom and not our own. He says this in John 6:38, “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.”
We live in a world that trains us to focus on and live for ourselves (our goals, our happiness, our time, our sexual ethic, our glory, etc.) But God has an agenda for us. He has plans for us that are for our good, to give us a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11) He has prepared works for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10) He has fruit he wants to grow in us and sharp edges that need to be chiseled off, so that others can see him in us. His will for us is higher and greater than our will, and lifts us out of the dead-end pit of self-absorption and lets us participate with him in the redemption of the world around us!
This is something we can easily forget as we navigate our little individual world! So as we come to the word daily, we put our wills (our bodies, our all) on the altar and remind ourselves that it is God’s kingdom we are here for, not our own. We don’t study the word simply for knowledge, but to allow him to transform us through it! As we read, we listen for what the Holy Spirit is saying to us, asking him to lead and guide us in his perfect will for our lives.
My Jesus, how easy it is to live with me on the throne of my life! Many days, I don’t even think about what you would want me to do for you, as I am just out doing my thing. Help me to have the mind of Christ, wishing to do only the will of my Father! What parts of my life have I refused to surrender to you? How would you lead me in this word today?
Lord in heaven, make Rio a church that follows closely after your will! Move us, as one, as we seek to be led by you! I pray for our pastors, our staff and our elders and deacons, that you would unite them with your vision for our people.
As I read the passage again slowly, I listen for anything that You would say to me in it. Help me see how to position my life in order to yield to your word…

Yielding Prayer
Father God, teach me to walk in the light of this truth. In my job, with my family, in the things I have to do, help me to move through my life with your Kingdom on my heart and mind. I recognize the bondage of self and would ask you to help me to live with a more conscious awareness of your direction and will for me!
Yielding Promise
And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me says to me in Matthew 6…
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33
Closing Prayer
Father, help me to live this day to the full, being true to you in every way. Jesus, help me to give myself away to others, being kind to everyone I meet. Spirit, help me to love the lost, proclaiming Christ in all I do and say. Amen1
