The
Heart Behind
Family Worship

Family Worship is a devotional plan which equips your family to build upon the gospel truths your child learns Sunday in children’s church

We include scripture, questions, and a prayer for you and your child to engage with throughout the week. It is our goal to give you tools to help model a personal worship practice for your children.

Unit 32 • Session 5

We Are Part of One Church

Big Picture Unit Question:

What is the church? The church is all Christians everywhere, who gather together in their communities to worship and serve God.

Christ Connection:

Paul told the believers in the Corinthian church to come together because of the gospel. He reminded them that Jesus saves sinners. Because of Jesus and what He has done, believers from every nation, tribe, people, and language can humbly come together as one body—the church.

Preschool Bible Story

Elementary Bible Story

One of Africa’s most incredible animals is the Cape Buffalo. One interesting fact about the Cape Buffalo is how they protect one another when danger threatens the herd. The Cape Buffalo will come together to form one large circle. They place the calves and weaker members of the herd inside the circle, and the other members of the herd face outward to fight off whatever predator is coming their way. It’s a great picture of working together to save lives!

When Paul heard about the arguing and fighting between the believers in Corinth, he wrote a letter to give them instructions and encouragement to live as followers of Jesus. Paul urged the people to live as people who were forgiven and accepted in Christ. Paul reminded them that their hope in Jesus should unite and not divide.

As believers live and work together in unity, the people around them can see what it means to worship and follow Jesus. Much like the Cape Buffalo coming together in the circle, all believers can work together to share message of Jesus—and that is the message that truly saves lives!

Paul told the believers in the Corinthian church to come together because of the gospel. He reminded them that Jesus saves sinners. Because of Jesus and what He has done, believers from every nation, tribe, people, and language can humbly come together as one body—the church.

Questions:

1) How have you seen the church work together?

Answers will vary. Discuss different events or church services and how each person plays an important role. For example, during VBS many people work together to make snacks, lead in music, create crafts, design decorations, and play games. Remind kids that God has designed the body to work together to serve and honor Him.

2) Do we need to be jealous of others or think any one has a better job in the church? Why not?

Remind kids that no job is more important than another. Discuss how becoming jealous or prideful leads to division. Explain that we need to remember that God has given each person a way to serve and that without every part the body would not work as He designed it to. Encourage kids to celebrate each person’s gift and be thankful for how God has made everyone to serve an important job.

3) How is the church one body even though we are many parts?

Prompt kids to think about how every person who belongs to the church first trusted in Jesus. Tell kids that it is our faith in Jesus that unites us and the Holy Spirit living in us that joins us together. Remind kids that even when we have differences, we are still one body in Jesus.

Pray:

God, thank You for showing us what it means to love Jesus and follow Him. Help us to know Jesus and to live in a way that shows our faith in Him. We want to see Your people work together to share the good news about Jesus with everyone. Amen.

For just as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ.
