Personal Worship

We start our day in 1 Peter, meditating on what it looks like for us to be priests in our lives.

Together we will pray (P.R.A.Y.) each day – ‘P’: Pausing to be still as we come into the presence of the Lord. ‘R’: Rejoicing as we remember who our God is and what He has done, and Reflecting on His word. ‘A’: Asking God to help us and others. And ‘Y’: yielding to His will in accordance with His word.

Pause

As I come before you to pray, I still my thoughts and quiet my mind. I seek to make you the center of my focus.

Prayer of Approach

Lord, you invite me to bring all of my weariness and burdens to you. I do that now trusting that you are the God who not only hears me, but loves me enough to meet with me. Let me experience your grace and mercy as I open up your Word. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and speak to me.

Rejoice and Reflect

I choose to rejoice, with all God’s people, in the powerful promise that God gives us in Psalm 46…

1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.

       Psalm 46:1-3

As you read the passages below, ask the Lord to cause a word or phrase to stand out to you.

1So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”

and

“A stone of stumbling,
    and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

       1 Peter 2:1-12

As I reread the passage, I reflect on the questions, “How is my life touched by this word?” and “How does this passage connect with my life?”

1So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

       1 Peter 2:1-12

One of the core doctrines of the Protestant Reformation expounded by Martin Luther was the priesthood of all believers. The truth that when we enter into a relationship with God that we do not need any mediators outside of Jesus. The work of Jesus on the cross is enough. Jesus is constantly mediating on our behalf to the Father. There’s a beauty in that which we can rest in. In that freedom we get the opportunity to be priests to one another. We get to care for one another’s souls. Peter in this passage describes us as living stones being built up as a spiritual house. We get to do this with one another. We get to encourage and equip each other in our walk with the Lord, because the truth is we need it. We need brothers by our side who are on our team pointing us back to the good news of Jesus and the finished work of the cross.

Ask

Lord, let me walk in the freedom of not what I have to do, but what I get to do. I ask you to fill me with your Spirit and show me what it looks like to be a priest to those around me. Let me be your hands and feet in this world that so desperately needs it.

  1. Where am I holding onto malice, deceit, malice, envy, or slander? Will I give it to the Lord?
  2. Do I long for “the pure spiritual milk” that grows me into salvation? Will I ask the Holy Spirit to increase that longing?
  3. Does my identity rest in the truth that I am a part of a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a people for God’s own possesion? Where am I tempted to doubt that?
  4. What does it look like for me to be a priest in my daily life?

Lord, let revival start with me today. Will your Spirit blow through the caverns of my soul? Show me where I am in error and lead me by your kindness to repentance. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and let me experience all that you have for me.

Yield

As I read the passage for the final time, I listen to how the Lord is inviting me to respond to him. Where in my life do I need to yield in obedience to what he has for me?

1So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

       1 Peter 2:1-12

Yielding Prayer

Lord, in obedience I lay my life down because I know this life is not my own, but it was bought with a price. I follow after you Jesus in a way that denies myself and takes up my cross daily to follow you. Fill me with your Spirit and give me strength for today.

Yielding Promise

And now, as I move into the day ahead, the Lord who loves me reminds me in Deuteronomy 31…

It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

       Deuteronomy 31:8

Closing Prayer

Lord, enable me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love you today with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength; and to serve you today, by loving and caring for others as I do my own self; and, to exalt you today, by telling the people in my world about the abundant and eternal life found only through faith in Jesus.
