Hey Church!

There is a Christian doctrine known as the “Perseverance of the Saints” that is not often discussed in popular circles and yet is an indispensable pillar of our faith. In short, it means that one who is authentically saved by grace through faith in Jesus cannot lose their salvation. Though a saved person falls into temptation, or even lives in notorious rebellion against the Savior for long seasons of time, God’s saving grip will never falter.

Here is the more nuanced (and brilliant!) definition from The Westminster Confession of Faith:

Of The Perseverance of the Saints.

I. They whom God hath accepted in his Beloved, effectually called and sanctified by his Spirit, can neither totally nor finally fall away from the state of grace; but shall certainly persevere therein to the end, and be eternally saved.

II. This perseverance of the saints depends, not upon their own free-will, but upon the immutability of the decree of election, flowing from the free and unchangeable love of God the Father; upon the efficacy of the merit and intercession of Jesus Christ; the abiding of the Spirit and of the seed of God within them; and the nature of the covenant of grace; from all which ariseth also the certainty and infallibility thereof.

III. Nevertheless they may, through the temptations of Satan and of the world, the prevelancy of corruption remaining in them, and the neglect of the means of their perseverance, fall into grievous sins; and for a time continue therein: whereby they incur God’s displeasure, and grieve his Holy Spirit; come to be deprived of some measure of their graces and comforts; have their hearts hardened, and their consciences wounded; hurt and scandalize others, and bring temporal judgments upon themselves.

This Sunday, we will learn a new song that is a beautiful response to this most wonderful promise. “He Will Hold Me Fast” is a hymn that was originally written over 100 years ago (1906) and has survived a number of revisions that resulted in the beautiful melody and lyrics we will have the privilege of singing together this weekend. As you know, I love Shane & Shane’s arrangements, so theirs is the particular recording that our worship team will emulate.

Listen and be blessed! Though your faith may fail and the tempter often prevails, Christ will hold you fast. Amen!

Grace and Peace,
Ryan

He Will Hold Me Fast

Verse 1
When I fear my faith will fail
Christ will hold me fast
When the tempter would prevail
He will hold me fast
I could never keep my hold
Through life’s fearful path
For my love is often cold
He must hold me fast

Chorus
He will hold me fast
He will hold me fast
For my Savior loves me so
He will hold me fast

Verse 2
Those He saves are His delight
Christ will hold me fast
Precious in His holy sight
He will hold me fast
He’ll not let my soul be lost
His Promises shall last
Bought by Him at such a cost
He will hold me fast

Verse 3
For my life He bled and died
Christ will hold me fast
Justice has been satisfied
He will hold me fast
Raised with Him to endless life
He will hold me fast
Till our faith is turned to sight
When He comes at last
